Hi, my real name is Rasha (Arabic for “young gazelle”) and I’m a Real World/Road Rules addict. Yes, I’m 30 years old and I absolutely love those shows. Anyway, the new cast of Road Rules has a member named Yes. He was named after the band. He has a brother named Uriah (as in Heep). On a more personal note, my parents had wild hairs up their butts when deciding on my name. Their names are Cheryl and Bob. My brother’s name is Steve. Your basic WASP family. So, when my husband and I were first married, we were lazy about getting pictures taken to send to extended family members. His grandmother was convinced that I was an African-American woman and that _that_ was the reason we hadn’t sent a picture! * * * Most common question I ask: “What?” Most common question I get: “Are you really hearing impaired?” ---

I heard this on either The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, or The Late Show with David Letterman. Sometimes audience members are asked questions for prizes and one of the questions was: Who is Dick Buttons? A) A US Olympic Skating Coach or B) What John Wayne Bobbitt’s doctors used to reattach his penis? FTR I think he was the coach. 🙂 (There seemed to be many postings with the name “Dick” so I couldn’t resist.) ---

I worked for a firm named after the owners. Everytime I answered the phone I had to say this. “Good morning. This is Gross may I help you.” I dreaded answering the phone. Some people didn’t make a snide remark at that point, most did. ---

Former Assistant Principal in HS was named Mr. Dick and the rumor started his first name was Harry. Turns out it was Richard… Yes, Dick Dick! I once worked for a guy named **Boofer Wilkey** Near here is a business called **Adcock Prosthetics** I had a teacher in junior high school named **Miss Fortune** Chattanooga was once the home of **Fannie O’Rear** That last one, bless her heart, was in the phone book and called up by kids for years. She didn’t seem to see what was so funny about her name. ---

I have a friend named Kim Fuchs too. Small world. Also someone mentioned my last name here, I’ve never met anyone with my last name before. Its not really strange, but my dad’s mother remarried and took a new name, he is an only male child, and I am an only child, so you can see that I’m the last hope for my name. ---

Narile, there really was a Cardinal Sin, but IIRC, his see was the Philippines. I’ve run into a few of these postings before. Allegedly Gov. Hogg of Texas named his daughter Ima because he realized she would be picked on, whatever her name, so he made it so bad that it would head them off at the pass, so to speak. (While she’s not an urban legend, that reason may be.) My own favorite story on this is a college professor, a very competent developmental psychologist named Kermit Kuntz. If that isn’t enough, he was junior author of an adolescent psych. textbook with Gordon Allcock. Needless to say, that is one textbook not referred to by the authors’ names!
