My wife’s foster sister’s cat had a litter of kittens, two of which were missing part of a hind leg, and rather than let them go to a shelter (where we were sure they’d be euthanized) we took them. The male had a bit more of his leg than his sister and had a peculiar humping walk, so we named him Long John after the peg-legged pirate. His sister ended up being named Muffin, to keep with the bakery theme. We also had an orange kitten who from the start was a ball of fluff, so he was named Pumpkin. He never grew out of his kitteny fluffiness, and had to be given a “lion-cut” periodically because his fur would get so matted. ---

Our Great Dane is Huckleberry. It fits him perfectly. But of course, it’s been shortened to Huck and sometimes lengthened to Huckle Buckle Beanstalk (also fitting, given his size). He’s also known as Huck A Buck, Big Hunk of Junk, and Huckle Hound. Our boxer is Rigatoni. He is also known as Riggs and Rigatone. Our German Shepherd is Zebadiah. AKA Zeb, Zebby, Zebby Doodles, and Zebby Doodler. ---

When I was 12, I found a caterpillar and tried to raise it to a butterfly\*\*. I called him / her Murgatroyd. The reason was that it was the silliest given name I knew about. Unfortunately Murgatroyd died before he / she could pupate so I never saw him / her grow up. \*\* Had Murgatroyd grown up, I believe he / she would have turned into a rather dull moth species and not a butterfly. ---

My late dog’s full name & title (you can see him in my avatar) was… Constable Huxley Tafadzwa Skelton-Buckland, Guardian of the Front Garden. But we called him Hux. ---

My family had: A cat named Wankel, for his purr. A cat named Velcro. She was a skittish kitten, and had to be peeled off when you wanted to set her down. A budgie (re-)named Waldo, whose favorite game was to hide silently while everybody panicked. ---

The Chihuahuas came here with my daughter. She’s not real imaginative naming animals(cannot say that about her children, I’m still not sure how to spell one of the boys names). Anyway the names were very embarrassing and spelled oddly. And they(the pups), flat did not respond to them. I called them the Lil’ shits. It was determined the babies were picking it up and I was duly chastised. So I renamed them; Butch and the Sundance kid. It was decided they looked like the famous photo of the legendary Outlaws. After a couple days laughing about it was deemed their new names. So I call the “Outlaws” or “Butch and the Kid” they come every time. Funny aside, I use a homemade ASL sign. Hand down by my thigh and wiggle fingers for the “littles” Bayliss knows it means the Outlaws. They know it means themselves. It’s incorrect in a bunch of ways. It’s a shortcut if I can’t squeak out their names that day ---

I’m reminded of an episode of I Dream of Jeanie wherein Jeanie turns Roger into a dog, and some character reacting to the name Roger for a dog when they were out calling for him. Are there dogs named Roger irl? ---

If I had a pair of pet salmon, I would name the female ‘Ella’, and the male ‘Rushdie’. I think ‘Fernando’ would be a good name for a llama, and ‘Gerald’ a good one for an elephant. ---
