Well, see, that makes it much funnier (and makes more sense).

There was an ad that was run, AFAIK only once, and when I saw it, it was during the Oscar pre-show, 2001. Beautiful, I mean _stunningly gorgeous_ footage of people and scenery in remote parts of the world. Voiceover talks about how awesome the internet is, and how there will soon be connectivity in every corner of the globe: “There will be more people online than there are…people…on…earth.” And just as I’m thinking “Waitaminut—that’s not possible…”, smash cut to another montage of techies screaming at their computers, ranting, spittle flying, pounding desks, neck veins ready to pop.

Needless to say, I was howling. I only wish I remembered the name of the sponsor. Or that the ad had been rerun! Anyone else remember this?

This is just a geeky thing, but in one of the last episodes of Lost’s first season, Michael is on the boat and he comes out to Jin, who’s assembling the rudder, and says “No, no, no! This one goes there, that one goes there!” and I could not help but laugh out loud!

Why?

Because it’s a quote from _The Empire Strikes Back_ when Han Solo is getting angry at Chewbacca trying to repair the Millennium Falcon.

It’s not a funny line in and of itself, but when you know that it’s a deliberate steal, and such an obscure one to use, too, it makes it very funny!

In the episode of the Simpsons where the mock UN kids get stuck on an island, James Earl Jones does a voiceover at the very end of the show as the camera pulls away from the island:

\<deep, resonating voice\>
And in the end, all the children learned to live together in peace and harmony. And eventually they were rescued by … oh, let’s say Moe."

Cracks me up every time.

There was a skit on **Sesame Street** where Susan Sarandon and the Count were knocking on the door of a castle because they wanted to get out of the rain and use the phone. I know the producers of Sesame Street want parents to watch with their children, but how many parents who are also Rocky Horror fans do they expect there to be?

Very old Sesame Street episode. The various people and muppets are in costumes, headed to a TV show like “Let’s Make a Deal,” trying to win a contest for something or other. David is dressed as a Christmas tree and is having difficulty getting onto the bus. Somebody gives him a push. “Hey, watch it!” he says. “You’re breaking my balls!”

My (at the time) 3 or 4 year-old did not understand my laughter.

On an episode of “Murphy Brown”, Murphy had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She was going to different doctors, trying to decide whether to have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. Frank was going with her. One doctor who thought she should have a mastectomy showed Murphy a prostheic (sp?) breast. He was telling her how realistic it felt, and encouraged both Murphy and Frank to feel it. Murphy held it in her hand and squeezed it a little, and Frank sort uf uneasily poked at it once or twice. Murphy looked at the fake breast and said, “He’ll call you”.

AND: one of the latest Geico commercials
(turns out I was mistaken but:)
the scene is a stream, up which salmon are swiming, as the voiceover describes their journey, and their all too brief lifespan (camera pans to a bear who picks up a salmon) and _ **I SWEAR** _ it was the bear who said “But there’s good news, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico” (it’s actually the narrator, but you watch that commercial and tell me you don’t, for a brief moment, think it’s the bear)

Some RHPS friends and I had a similar reaction while watching “Clue,” when the motorist (wearing a tan jacket like Brad’s) asks to come out of the rain and use the phone.

I mentioned this in another thread not too long ago, but there’s a moment in _Blue Velvet_ where Jeffrey asks Sandi what she’s heard about the severed ear, and she replies “just bits and pieces.” I’m reasonably sure it wasn’t intended as a joke but I cracked up.

How about in UHF - Trinidad Silva hosts an aminal show “teaching poodles to fly” and “turtles are nature’s suction cups” - in a later scene he’s accepting a delivery from the pet store, he drive is reading the inventory “3 kittens, 7 hamsters, 2 badgers” Sliva interrupts him, a severly irked look on his face, “Badgers??? We don’t need no stinking badgers!!!”

Good question. But there’s also something to be said for writing to amuse yourself.
