Why fishnet?
Got a pair or those mickey mouse boots. Also called bunny boots. Still have them. My understanding is that the air valve in them was just so you could equalize pressure when in an unpressurized plane. They are very warm for standing around, but a two legged cow could chase you down if you where wearing them.
I’m sure a fur lined hood has it’s place. And has done good. I do bet that it’s great for keeping in a bit of warmth and keeping a few snowflakes off. But current tech is better. Kinda depends on if your just trying to hail a cab or scale a mountain.
The Injuns did it with mittens, and I have proof, via this helpful but sadly, anonymous, poem, titled, The Modern Hiawatha:
It is really meant to be read aloud.
HE killed the noble Mudjokivis.
Of the skin he made him mittens,
Made them with the fur side inside,
Made them with the skin side outside.
He, to get the warm side inside,
Put the inside skin side outside;
He, to get the cold side outside,
Put the warm side fur side inside.
That ’s why he put the fur side inside,
Why he put the skin side outside,
Why he turned them inside outside.
I think it’s the frost from your exhaled breath that they’re talking about.
They were Marines of course…![]()
Back in 1963 we had a pretty severe winter; I was driving a truck with a pretty inefficient heater and discovered just how warm tights could be. Only problem came when I needed a pee, but a small (It was very cold) hole resolved that.
Für Trim on a Parka Hood.
That would work as the title of a Quentin Tarantino Film. It would generate all sorts of heady discussion, since nowhere in the movie would it be clearly referenced.
nm dupe.
I know it’s 11 years later, but it sounds like a good study for Improbable Research.
It’s better, but it won’t be in ten years. I have lots of really spiffy technical winter clothing, but I also have a serious down parka my Dad bought in 1976 when he worked in Frobisher Bay. It shows no signs of wearing out.
And the hood is trimmed with fur, yes.
As one of many not-Norwegian women who have used it for a long time, fishnet stockings are surprisingly good insulation. Full stockings, whether light or heavy, are worse insulation: they’re colder when cold and warmer when warm, making them much worse when you’re going to be moving between cold outdoors and heated indoors. I had a job in Scotland where I discovered that by happenstance and asked the rest of the team (all female except for one guy, who excused himself from the test) to try it without telling them why; they all reported the same findings as me. We figured it had something to do with air being trapped in the holes: air is a great insulator.
Why would he excuse himself from the test? Oh, sure, he wore long pants all the time, but he might have learned some useful information for when he had to wear a kilt.
But. But. But then they’d have to change the lyrics. ![]()
