Gale Sayers, Why in HOF?

Whoosh!

Why not put Hester in then - because if Gayle Sayres belongs then certainly …

But sarcasm aside it is a crime that Sayres is in but Roger Craig isn’t … not saying it is flat out crazy Sayres is there but there are more deserving folk not in…

Jeez dude, at least learn how to spell the man’s name correctly.

Misspellings aside, Roger Craig may well make the Hall of Fame, but with expansion and larger rosters and different roles for players, there will likely be longer waits to get in.

I am somewhat surprised that people today think that is hard to believe that Gale Sayers doesn’t believe to be in the Hall of Fame. I would think anyone who did see him play would have considered him a surefire inductee into Canton.

Hester obviously isn’t in the Hall itself, however with his 108 yard touchdown he’ll be represented in one of the displays at the Hall like Vasher currently is for the longest play in the NFL.

I agree. It would be interesting to read articles about the HOF voting from 1977, the year of his enshrinement. I was 16 years old then and don’t remember there being any controversy about Sayers going into the HOF.

I don’t think anyone against him being there feels he was not a great player- it is more the whole brevity thing. There are dozens of players who have had three or four great seasons (Terell Davis, Jamal Lewis, Billy Sims, George Rogers) who are not in or will not get in.

Let me amen this. Clinton Portis in 4 good years and 1 injury plagued one has 6453 yards or about 1500 more rushing yards than Sayres got over 7 seasons. Thier recieving yardage is almost identical (tho Sayers averaged 3 yards more per catch). I use Portis becuase they played in teh same number of games (68).

I guess I think it is fair to ask how come - and if the answer is *Well, he was a special case - you had to see him to understand it * -OK I can live with that fair enough.

What I can’t understand is how people can get goggled eyed and flop around like they are chocking and act like it is the dumbest thing they ever heard. Because his statistics really aren’t those of a Hall of Famer and toa rgue otherwise is silly.

But people don’t get into the HOF on statistics alone. Joe Namath, for instance, is only there because of his $400,000 signing bonus, one or two good years, and one particular victory. He deserves it, but his stats over a career can be called into question if you think stats are everything.

Ah, Joe Namath- another dubious induction. Never completed more than 53% of his passes in a season, and only once had more TD’s than INT’s. Career totals of 173 TD’s, 220 INT’s. But he had nice legs, I forgot

Steve Grogan played a comparable number of games and has better overall stats than Joe Willie.
