So… I’ve played a variant of this, but I’m not sure of the local rules. Is there a post somewhere that summarizes? Specifically, how much web searching is allowed in each role, and how do ‘reserved questions’ work? I think I’m safe enough from context for these three: IQ1. Are you one of the kids on _South Park_? IQ2. Did you star in the movie _Cocoon_? IQ3. Did you write a short story more than a hundred years ago that is the basis for (and, after truncation, gives the title to) a current TV series? ---

Sometimes guessers will amass a few DQs and decide to reserve one or more of them. Maybe there will be DQs that haven’t been answered yet, and the guessers want to see what the answers are before proceeding. Also, we might be nearing the 20 DQ limit, and the guessers might want more time to figure out the mystery guest’s identity before hitting the limit. So, if you decide not to use all your DQs, just announce how many you’re reserving. ---

The more the merrier! \*\*No \*\*Web Searching is allowed to anyone except the Chooser, and he/she only gets to research questions in regards to the Subject. It’s all in our heads. We play that you can only ask up to three IQs at a time. The Letter you get is usually your choice, although right now we are going through the alphabet, a-z, and are up to W. The Letter, as we are playing now, should be the initial of the Subject’s first name or last name (but not middle name, unless that’s the name he/she’s really best known by). As KO said, if you don’t want to guess all your DQs right away, you don’t have to, and those left are kept in reserve. Enjoy! ---

The Host (the term I prefer :)) is the _only_ one who should be doing any research, and that only to make sure (s)he gives correct answers to DQs. All IQs and IQ answers should come from your own memory. We’ve adopted a few other conventions, such as: Sitting Bull’s first name is “Sitting,” and “Bull” is his last name, for the purpose of questions regarding first and last names. The same, of course, applies to Crazy Horse and others who have two-word single names. Most people don’t even know John Calvin Coolidge’s first name (or that “Calvin” isn’t it); therefore he can be used as a ‘C,’ but not as a ‘J.’ The same goes for Stephen Grover Cleveland (‘G’ or ‘C,’ but not ‘S’) and others with given names that are usually found only in encyclopedias. On the other hand, no one ever calls John Philip Sousa by just his first and last names, so he can legitimately be used as a ‘P.’ The same goes for John Wilkes Booth, D H Lawrence, T S Eliot, and others who are always referred to using their middle name or initial. ---

Oh - as mentioned by KO, we play until 20 direct questions have been answered. If we reach that point without anyone’s having made a correct guess, then each person who has been awarded a DQ is then permitted one more DQ, in the form “Are you Firstname Lastname?” The host doesn’t have to cut the game off at 20 DQs if he doesn’t want to. For instance, if I’m the host, 18 questions have been answered, and I get home from work to find five or six DQs waiting for me, I’ll probably answer all of them. ---
