Fine. Assume that if anyone talks about what might happen in the series, that they’re speculating, rather than spoiling anything. If they did post a spoiler, the issue can be handled through moderation, not by people overreacting to it. If possible, attempt to phrase your speculation in a way that makes it clear it’s speculation. Don’t just say “Geoffrey gets raped and killed by a lizard” if you’re listing what you hope happens. Let’s not spoil, nor freak out about speculation because we’re paranoid about spoilers. Good?
Yes, thank you. Also, its Joffrey :).
So the lizard part is true?
maybe!
There was spoiler paranoia last year. I know because I was accused of spoilering more than once and I had not read the book before hand. It was very stupid.
Looks to me like we’re just gonna have to have two threads for each episode then - one for those who have and one for those who haven’t read the books. You really can’t expect me to remember what backstory was a. In the books only, b. In the books and on the Bluray extras or c. Made it onto the show in season 1, not to mention d. Stuff changed for the show (Joffery to Geoffery, Ros the Whore, etc).
Last year there was one long thread that covered the spoiler discussion of the whole season that was very active. I don’t care if it’s split up into weekly threads - I only care that these threads remain good. If you can’t remember if something is a spoiler or not, refrain from posting it in this thread.
Moderator Note:
Last year we enforced the thread rules as they were developed. This year, I think we can agree that the previous solution of three threads operating in conjunction will give the best result. It’s not a solution everyone will be 100% happy with, but it’s the best one we have. Discussion of alternative and superior solutions would be appreciated - in its’ own ATMB thread, not in these threads.
So, as laid out in the OP, three threads:
[ul]
[li]This thread, which will contain zero spoilers.[/li][li]A half-spoiler thread for in which those with spoilerific knowledge are to use their sound judgement before posting. Requests for specific information by those who haven’t read the books should be made here. Non-TV resources like webzines, interviews, etc should probably also be confined here. (Normal usage of spoiler tags much appreciated.)[/li][li]A full-spoiler thread in which all spoilers from every resource is fair game.[/li][/ul]
If anyone wants to make the two latter threads, feel free. Otherwise I’ll get to it tomorrow.

Any chance of adding a fourth thread for those of us who have read the first 4 books but not Dance of Dragons yet, where spoilers only up to the end of Feast of Crows are allowed?
The vast majority of people watching Game of Thrones have no read the books. As such, having threads which cater to that vast majority is neither esoteric nor onerous.
Look, you guys shit all over our threads last year with your “I’m gonna spoil whatever I want and if you don’t like it then you’re just an uptight precious snowflake” bullshit. STOP SHITTING IN THIS THREAD NOW.
Go away, no one wants you here anymore than you seem to want to be here.
Álready? Nobody has spoiled anything. The damned show hasn’t even started yet and already the paranoia has reached a fevered pitch. Tone it down a little. This is coming from someone who was accused of spoiling more than once last season and I hadn’t even heard of the books until after I started watching.
Calm down! Sheesh!
What are you talking about? I never said anyone spoiled anything. I said he was threadshitting.
Just as with last year, people who objected to the spoiler policies of threads - and more generally, on this board, become childishly defiant, insulting anyone who wants to avoid spoilers. Their threadshitting, more than any actual spoilers, are what derailed and destroyed the early threads last year.
Fusoya and DigitalC in particular have a history of shitting up the threads, insulting everyone else who wanted to avoid spoilers and fighting the spoiler policies of the thread.
They’re here to be combative and to insult everyone else. This is exactly the sort of behavior I’m trying to curtail by getting out early and laying out hard and clear rules. They are violating that and threadshitting, quite deliberately, just as they did last year. I’m doing my best to put a stop to it as early as possible.
By the way, I’m assuming post 29 to be condescending and insulting. As in “I’ve read halfway through book 3, but skipped chapter 2, but read chapter 4, 6, and 9. Therefore, I want a thread where people can spoil the TV show, books 1-2, and only chapters 4, 6, and 9 of book 3” as a way of mocking the idea that people could want the TV show to be unspoiled and stand on its own merits. If I was wrong, or if other people didn’t interpret the tone that way, then my post seems out of place.
Given the history of the poster, I think my interpretation is reasonable, but I may have jumped the gun on that one. You’ll notice that the two posters being combative are ironically coming in here and saying “oh do we have to go through this fighting again” when they’re actually the only ones instigating a fight.
I’m just trying to cut off this sort of fighting before it starts - we had half the first season discussion utterly wrecked by this shit and only later were we able to find a groove with multiple threads. I’m hoping to start where we left off.
Who is threadshitting what? I stated a number of times here and in the OTHER, FORBIDDEN thread that there should be 2 threads for each episode - one with spoilers, and one without spoilers. Everybody is trying to make things overly complicated with 3+ threads for each episode, all with their own complex rules, and post 29 is a joke on that (although it’s true, I haven’t had a chance to read book 5 yet, since I wanted to re-read books 1-4 first and have been taking my time, so I’m a little nervous about Dance of Dragon details leaking into the spoiler thread…).
The moderator asked you to take such discussion to ATMB. Please do so. Admitting that you posted just to mock people who wanted this thread is indeed pretty much the essence of threadshitting. If you want to create seperate threads for each episode, go nuts, although I think that’s probably excessive. Running threads along the lines that we had last year worked well then.
Seriously, if you have some sort of problem with the rules laid out in the OP, don’t continue to attempt to hijack this thread to complain. Take it to ATMB. This thread is already off to a really shitty start entirely based on the work of yourself and DigitalC.
This is the end of this line of discussion. We won’t take up any more of this thread with this sort of discussion. Anything else will go into ATMB. If you create, a thread, I will participate.
To everyone else - sorry if I’m coming off as overly hostile, and I’m going to do my best to get things back on track. If you were around for the clusterfucks last year, you’ll understand why I’m trying to lay out iron rules to avoid exactly this sort of thing.
Anyway, I think I’m going to try to give season 1 a marathon rewatch to get myself refreshed on everything. It’s complex enough, with enough moving pieces, that it’d be hard to remember everything from season 1. I can probably skip most of that stuff that happens at the wall, because that generally bores the hell out of me.
I’m going to miss Drogo, who was destined for Klingon greatness. That’s the death that most caught me offguard. Also, I’m really fond of the “dancing instructor”, so I hope he survived, although the fact that they didn’t bother to hint at anything else makes me suspect he was just a one time thing.
Just a warning - do NOT listen to the commentary track for The Pointy End. It’s hosted by George himself, and he spends quite a bit of time talking about the changes made between the book and the show, which I know some of you can’t stand to hear about (nevermind the fact that it is FULL of spoilers for both the second season and the other books).
How do you guys think they’ll pull off that raven morphing into a dragon? How big can their CGI budget be!?
That’s it. Everybody gets their own thread.
That’s just evil.
