I’m assuming that Dany’s commanders had already sent a few scouts through Dragonstone, and we the viewers don’t need to see such mundane details.

That’s what I assumed.

And I don’t mind cameos, especially with people I had never seen before.

I don’t think the scene suggested any significant scouting ahead of Dany, for example when they opened the gates. There should ideally have been a significant force inside the gates before Dany entered at all. IMO Tyrion and Varys should have anticipated that the Lannisters would know of Dany’s imminent arrival and might guess where she would land first.

Those are details to increase the drama. Increasing drama \> exactly correct logistics. Just pretend in your mind that the scouts wanted to make it all dramatic and presentable for their dragon queen, and therefore shut the gates and stayed out of sight. I do something like this probably a dozen times per episode, and it greatly increases my enjoyment.

Artistic license. This is a scene that the show has been building to for 6 years.

You’re kind of missing the point. Virtually any movie or TV show is going to gloss over details like this in the interest of more efficient storytelling. We don’t need to take everything we see absolutely literally. If it bothers you, you can imagine scouts were sent ahead or they had other intelligence. Or you can think that Dany and her companions were being incautious. But since it had no consequences, it’s irrelevant.

Or, you know, the fact that she has 3 giant dragons that had been swooping over the island. I’d imagine they’re pretty good at that sort of thing…

> That kind of sci-fi explanation would be a bit out of place, I think. The seasons in Westeros are just magic, same as how Daenerys can survive being burnt, or dragons can fly and breathe fire, or the white walkers can raise the dead. Plus I doubt anyone in Westeros is familiar with the whole “Earth goes around the sun” concept, so such an explanation would probably be lost on them…

Well the Citadel does have what appears to be a model of a solar system hanging from the sky in the library, and I think it’s a heliocentric on. Granted that’s not something the small folk would know much about (though the world being round would be common knowledge among Iron Islanders & mariners). I agree that it’s pointless trying to come up with a scientific explanation for the seasons; it’s got to magical. There simply isn’t a scientific explanation that would account for everything about the way seasons work on “Planetos”.

There really isn’t any reason to even assume that their world _is_ round, or that it’s part of a heliocentric solar system.

just last season Arya even asked “what’s West of Westeros?” implying that even if the world is round, they never sailed around it.

Astronomers think we are more likely to find life on a moon than on a planet in our solar system, so yeah. But this IS a work of fiction, so that shouldn’t matter.

I think they could satisfy science-geeks by couching the explanation in lore-appropriate setting…

Sam: “This old maester’s tome says that the stallion that mounts the world has two testicles, hung at different lengths, and his mare only comes into heat every twelve years! Clearly this means the coming war against the Wraith King is real!”

When winter comes, does it only come to Westeros? Does Essos (or any other continents) get winter? Like could someone say, “I’m just going to spend winter in Braavos, or Mereen?”

I’m thinking that winter is projected by the head White Walker to make it possible for his army to advance. He magically creates Winter ahead of them to facilitate the march forward. So I believe that Winter would only come to Essos if the White Walkers cross the Narrow Sea.

Braavos is slightly farther North than The Twins, has anyone noticed if it is snowing at The Twins yet, Because Braavos was plenty warm when Arya left.

I re-watched the cold open today. The hand picking up Walder Frey’s cup is definitely Walder’s hand, not Arya’s. So I’d say the faces somehow transform the whole body.

Which means that sometime during the preceding week Arya touched a “D” for the first time. LOL!

I’m worried that Lady Marmont has continued to make herself the most interesting character and thus will die a horrible death this season.
