In the Game of Thrones world, that’s a woman, not a child. Hell, Dany has been wedded and bedded already by that age!

Haven’t seen the ep yet, I’ll catch it on On Demand tonight.

> Feel free to spoil as needed.

The seven kingdoms are well, seven actual kingdoms that were united when the Targaryens conquered them. There is one king but each kingdom has a ruler from the old ancient families that used to be kings. They are The North ruled by the Starks of Winterfell, The Iron Islands ruled by the Greyjoys (their heir lives in Winterfell with the Starks as a hostage), The Westernlands ruled by the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, The Riverlands ruled by the Tullys of Riverrun (Cat was a Tully before marrying Eddard), The Vale of Arryn ruled by the Arryn’s of the Eyrie (Jon Arryn died on the first episode, they are currently ruled by Cat’s sister Liza and her 8 yo boy, she’s the one who sends the message warning the Starks about the Lannisters), The Reach ruled by House Tyrell of Highgarden, The Stormlands ruled by House Baratheon of Storm’s End (Roberts House), and Dorne ruled by House Martell.

Bastards from the seven kingdoms don’t receive their fathers last name but a generic last name depending from what kingdom they are from. Hence “Jon Snow” from the snowy north. So far we’ve only been exposed to the Starks, Lannisters and Robert Baratheon, but every kingdom plays a larger part as the story goes on. Actually Theon Greyjoy, the heir of the Iron Islands is also in Winterfell so i guess they count too. I don’t think there are any spoilers in this post, if anyone catches something that shouldn’t be here let me know.

Or a simpler answer, “the seven kingdoms” is the name of a single nation state (that Robert is king of) much like “The United States”.

Yes, 13’s still a child. But when you were 13, did you still believe that the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus were real?

That’s what’s a bit frustrating about Sansa. Yes, she’s young, and she’s lived a sheltered life - but she’s old enough that she SHOULD have already figured out that her beloved stories and songs aren’t an accurate depiction of real life. It may be an understandable flaw, but it’s a real one, and it leads her into real trouble. Westeros isn’t kind to romantic dreamers.

Since **DigitalC** has already answered your question about the Seven Kingdoms, I’ll just comment that we’re going to see a lot more of the other kingdoms later in the story. Right now, though, things are pretty focused on King’s Landing and Winterfell, and are going to stay that way for a while.

This question should perhaps be in Great Debates because it’s about far more than a fantasy TV series but involves elements of philosophy, biology, and other subjective and objective analyses of quantitative and qualitative reality, but I’ll ask it anyway and a mod can move it into it’s own debate thread if they choose:

Drogo and Daenerys going at it doggie (Droggie?) style: viscerally disturbing or hot as hell?

(The actors said it was incredibly uncomfortable to shoot.)

It was uncomfortable because they weren’t doing it right. 😉

I don’t see it as particularly disturbing – we’ve seen it on other HBO shows. The difference is that Dany’s so young, and so clearly not enjoying it. But it definitely wasn’t hot.

> ETA: Also, the little blonde prince is a loathsome dickhead. But the little white-haired pretender guy is a lovable dickhead.

The difference:
Joffrey (blonde) believes that as heir to the throne, he deserves to get whatever he wants all the time, and thus far in life, he’s always gotten it.

Viserys (white/silver-haired) believes that as heir to the throne, he deserves to get whatever he wants all the time, and thus far in life, he’s _never_ gotten it.

Hence one dickhead is ever so slightly more viewer-sympathetic than the other. 🙂
Liked this episode even more than the first, perhaps because the character introduction rate has slowed down (I think we just got Ilyn Payne, and Dany’s handmaidens, Tommen & Myrcella, unless you count Mycah, Nymeria, and Lady) so we get less exposition wedged in. Also, what happens to Nymeria and Lady are some of the most gut-wrenching scenes in the book for me (as a dog-lover) and they were done pretty well, so the emotional impact was high too.

The time passing is somewhat jarring, since it’s not obvious other than the wolves growing larger, until someone says something like “I’ve prayed over him for a month.” Unless I missed some subtle differences, it appears that most characters only have one costume, so it all seems to be happening in the same day.

Great scenes from Tyrion, of course. Cat and Jon’s scene was hard to watch, but well done. As was Cat and Ned’s talk over Bran. Can’t remember if Cat finding Cersei’s hair was in the book. Anyone else remember?

The “lesbian” scene with Dany was a little gratuitous, but I’m actually surprised HBO didn’t ramp it up further and have them nude for it. 🙂

The csi scene was not in the books.

I liked this episode a lot better on a second viewing. Not sure why.

Yeah. Jason Momoa naked, grunting and thrusting… what’s hot about that… 😛

Until the courtesan I was beginning to wonder if anybody in the 7 Kingdoms knew that doggie-style wasn’t the only posiition, for it is the only one we’ve seen (the Lannisters, the wedding, Khal, presumably the dire wolves).

While Joffrey’s nasty-little-Ken-Follett-villain is kind of one dimensional, I liked that his father admonished him for letting a girl and an unarmed untrained boy disarm him, which ironically probably made him madder at the kid than the truth would have.

One thing I didn’t get- was the butcher’s son intentionally run down and killed or was he killed accidentally while being chased?

It was intentional. He wasn’t trampled, but hacked with a sword.

I hear he’s the new Conan.

Momoa reminds me of someone but I can’t think who.

I was also surprised at the lack of nudity, or even nippling. I was waiting for Drogo to remove Dany’s dress. Maybe nudity’s not a turn-on in Dothraki culture.
