Tonight I attended the first session of a film festival called _Godzilla and Friends_. There were trailers for various Japanese monster films, door prizes, trivia about the movies, but the feature this evening was the newest Gamera film, from 2006. _Gamera the Brave_ was dubbed into English, and I must say the effects are better than the old days. It explored the origins of how Gamera, or, I should say, _a_ Gamera, comes to be. Turns out there can be more than one! A young boy living in a town devestated, but now revived, after the last monster battle 33 years ago, finds a small egg resting on a large red stone, or shell. It hatches a small turtle, and you can probably guess the rest, it grows, starts to fly, battles a really evil monster that shows up, and much, much more! Has anyone else seen this film? It wouldn’t have got wide play in the US. Tomorrow we see the classic _King Kong vs. Godzilla_, a new documentary on the history of Godzilla, with the filmakers to talk about it, a feature from 1964 called _Atragon_, more movie trailers, a Q&A seesion, plus something billed as a Godzilla surprise. That has to be special, probably a film. It’s going to be a campy day. And I’ll love every cheesy minute. Tonight I won, in the free raffle, a 5 DVD set of ten campy old sci-fi films from the 50’s, and as a bonus each has one episode of the serial _Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe_. ---

Man alive do I wish I knew where this was happening!!! I LOVE Godzilla and I think a film festival of that caliber would be just awesome to go see. I am VERY VERY jealous. ---

Gamera The Brave is one of my son’s favourite films! He often asks about ‘that movie with the giant fire-breathing turtle’, and we sit down to re-watch and revel in the joy that is modern Kaiju. I tried to introduce him to Godzilla Final Wars, but it was just too dark for him. Watching some of the 1990’s Gamera films, I’m inclined to think they’re also a bit less ‘heavy’ than the standard Godzilla films (this is probably cos Gamera is essentially a ‘nice’ monster, and he doesn’t tend to destroy things, what with being a friend-to-all-children and all that jazz). ---

Any fans who want to camp out on me next time can do so. My house is only five minutes from the festival site, by car anyway. It’s actually an easy walk. I’m serious. You all wouldn’t even have to shell out for a motel. And the prizes are fun. If you have kids there’s even a Godzilla coloring contest for them! And a Godzilla roar contest! Think about it!
