I remember tearing up the first time I saw it too. I thought, all those hours those guys spent designing and creating a model for that balrog and they throw it in a hole after 30 seconds. At least they get to use it again for the second movie 🙂

Quick question off topic, but I didn’t want to start a new thread:

I was just rereading FOTR, and didn’t catch where Frodo dropped the ring and Boromir picked it up. I was positive that was in the book. Was it not on their trip up Caradras, or was it just a very small mention?

Never happened in the book.

If you remember the scene from the book where Boromir attempts to seize the ring, he begins by “casually” asking Frodo for another look at it, saying he only got a glimpse of it in Rivendell.

Huh. Man, and I thought they had really picked up on a great moment in the book when they had it in the movies.

In the book, if that were to happen, would Boromir have been instantly seduced by the Ring and run off? Gandalf actually touches the Ring in the book, and he was fine.

Does he ever touch the ring? I don’t remember that.

Yes, but did he actually _touch_ the ring in the process? I’ll have to check when I get home, but I don’t think he does.

In the movie, he throws the envelope holding the ring into the fire, which burns away.

Since I am re-reading the books right now, I have it close at hand. Let’s see…

> [@](#):
>
> ```
> Frodo Took it from his breeches-pocket, where it was clasped to a chain that hung from his belt. He unfastened it and handed it slowly to the wizard. It felt suddely very heavy, as if either it or Frodo himself was in some way reluctant for Gandalf to touch it
>
> Gandalf held it up. It looked to be made of pure and solid gold. 'can you see any markings on it?' he asked.
>
> 'No,' said Frodo. 'There are none. It is quite plain, and it never shows a scratch or sign of wear'
>
> 'Well then, look!' To Frodo's astonishment and distress the wizard threw it suddely into the middle of a glowing corner of the fire. Frodo gave a cry and groped for the tongs; but Gandalf held him back.
>
> ```

and there you have it, Gandalf does touch the ring, albeit only briefly.

Clearly Frodo was shocked because Gandalf touched it with his bare hand.

IMO the way it was handled in the movie was better, with Gandalf never directly touching the ring.
