To this day I can’t watch a light saber fight without expecting the sabers to wrap around each other. Also, when the one guy dropped his, shouldn’t it have automatically retracted?

I’ve only seen all the movies once, but I’m pretty sure Luke drops his Light Saber at least twice and it always [turns off](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6sj89xgnl4#t=50s) right away. I was under the impression a button has to be held down (or you at least have to be holding on to it) to keep it on.
ETA, that link might be loud, I didn’t realize how low my volume was when I was watching it.

Light sabers usually thur off when dropped, implying tha tthe default switch is a deadman switch, but there’s precedent for them to be able to be on when not held; throwing the lightsaber at someone is a pretty common thing in SW canon, and obviously that only works if it can be switched on when you’re not holding it.
Maybe it’s just a shitty light saber. Chinese import.
