Gardeners - help with cymbidium space needed

Yes, but it looks like I am going to have to get the weed whacker out.

Those darn cymbidiums …!!!

i hate you i hate you i hate you

Thanks for the warning on overwatering. If I get game and try other orchids, are there ones you would recommend? I’m into show. Not very good at subtle.

And thanks for the laughs!

Ahh, no.

*Cymbidium *is a huge genus and grows in a wide variety of enviornments, and the cultivated forms are hybrids of most of these species. There are Cymbidiums that flourish in the tropical savannas of Northern Australia, in environments with mean summer maxima in excess of 40oC and less than 800mm annual rainfall. There are dozens of others that flourish throughout the tropical rainforests of South-east Asia where the mean annual temperature is in excess of 25oC and the mean annual maximum is in excess of 32oC.

  • Cymbidium*s love the heat and they thrive on it. The vast majority of species simply will not survive if you can not maintain an extremely warm environment. A tiny, tiny number manage to survive in some upland regions, and these may be the species that you are most exposed to, living in a cold climate yourself. But these species are very much the exception.

You may be right. I do know I’ve seen quite a few flourishing Cyms year round outdoors in the SFBA. They are the larger variety and almost certainly hybrids.

In response to the OP’s request: I am personally partial to reedstem epidendrums. They like hot, they like cold, they like sun, they come in every possible color and grow like weeds and bloom year round.

I had never heard of them! Having done some online searching about them, I am heading for the nursery now. Thank you, Louise E. Perfect for what I need.

Isn’t it enough that I hate you because you can grow them outside? Now you can walk over to the nursery and PICK THEM OUT!
Oh, fie! Fie!

Thanks, Louise E. I’ll ORDER SOME ON THE WEB. Grrrrrr…
