When I re-potted the ficus a couple years ago I attached a pulley to our arbor. I tied a climbing rope, using a knot system so that the force was distributed evenly over the trunk, and I lifted the plant up out of its pot (after a bunch of work to loosen it).

Root pruned it then replanted into its new pot.
