The same thing can be said about half of the threads posted. I wouldn’t spend a lot of thought on the subject but it is somewhat amusing to speculate whether it is her, whether the image has been altered, or whether it is someone who looks like her.
The Washington City Paper had a mention of the photograph and pointed out that there was something weird going on in the background of the picture. The poster behind H.R. looks weirdly cut off and the wall changes color behind Brooke Shields.
Even if it’s true that she didn’t hang out with many ‘brothas’, this isn’t a photo of a woman with many anyone. This is a photo of a woman with one specific individual.
Once the question is narrowed down to one individual, you still think that person’s race is the most important data point???
Upthread, Crazyhorse points out (though without a cite) that Brooke Shields hosted a Punk radio show at about the time the photo seems to be taken. The man in the photo has been pointed out by Crazyhorse (and by Irishman before him) to be Punk Musician HR from the band Bad Brains.
Whether the woman is Brooke Shields or not, it shouldn’t be at all implausible that a celebrity host of a Punk radio show might be socializing with a prominent Punk Musician.
Yet, all this relevant data is somehow less significant to you than the fact that the man in question is black? Seriously? That is the most significant data point?

Not hosted, but ‘opened’ e.g. a one time sound byte of her voice introduced a punk radio show every night on LA station KROQ. It was the Rodney On The Roq show. Here is an example.
So it doesn’t place her in a LA punk radio station every night but it does establish that she spent at least some time there and would likely be most welcome to join HR’s smoke break if they were there at the same time recording promos, or whatever. That combined with her album cover work with another punk artist a few years earlier, and her general fame and celebrity, makes it plausible that she could have been hanging out with a famous punk rocker in some context or other in 1983. Of course that doesn’t mean that it is her, just that it isn’t entirely out of the question based on the context of the photo.
I saw that too, half the wall is a kind of blueish shade and the half behind the woman is solid white. The corner of the poster behind her is cut off, and the border of the poster seems to be the same color as the blueish wall. It is odd, but if someone photoshopped the woman into a photo of HR, it would still be a photo of a woman who looks a lot like Brooke Shields toking on a pipe which would have been newsworthy and ‘scandalous’ without needing to change the context it was taken.
I think there might be a white piece of posterboard or some other material behind the couch and in front of the poster that blocks the corner of the poster from view and makes it appear to be a different colored wall.

Thank god people post into threads on subjects that they don’t care about to inform us they don’t care. I would be left wondering if they cared or not! I usually just assume people that don’t post in a thread don’t care about it, but that leaves so many unanswered questions!

And don’t get your politically correct panties in too much of a knot, Shields’ career was ruled by her mom back then and in the mid-eighties there is no way she would have let her 14-year-old supermodel daughter hang with them. Just a practical, forensic observation of the facts.
Eddie Murphy used to do a bit about her & Michael Jackson going to the Grammys together. He said how the only reason they got away with it was because Jackson was a light-skinned, non-threatening black celebrity (his words!). He said if he tried to take her the public would have gotten upset because:
“… you all know Brooke would’ve been getting fucked that night!!”

In 1983 Brooke Shields was 18 years old. So you think that the photoshoot I linked to earlier was ok with mom at 15 but at 18 she wouldn’t have been allowed to drive to a local radio station on her own to record a promo?
Even at 18 her mom was still her manager, and although I can’t say if her mom was a racist she most definitely wanted Brooke to maintain a bankable, mainstream image. And for a stunningly beautiful, white, teen model in the 80s that would have meant not hanging around with black guys. Linda Blair dated Rick James for several months when she was 17 or 18 and was ostracized by Hollywood & the press because of it.
No fucking way did Brooke Shields smoke pot with HR. That didn’t happen.
