A Texas judge ruled Thursday that the state’s CROWN Act does not make it unlawful for school dress codes to limit a student’s hair length.
The decision is a blow to Darryl George, a Houston-area high school student who sued the Barbers Hill Independent School District after he was suspended for months over the length of his locs hairstyle.
Not at all surprised at the decision. As an earlier poster stated it’s Texas and even if appealed to the state Supreme Court, I’d be shocked if the ruling wasn’t upheld.
I grew up in Alabama during the civil rights era and despite the progress that has been made, I’m never surprised when courts either make or uphold questionable decisions where there is some aspect that involves a racial minority.
I am reminded that when I was in HS (a looong time ago) the only dress code we had was no jeans. In that era a beard would have been unimaginable. A dozen years later, I was a college professor wearing jeans and with a beard.
I wonder if the hair length only applies to males? If not, I can’t see females agreeing to that. If males only, then it becomes “gender discrimination”, maybe subject to legal action?
Yeah, the judge is a blithering idiot. The author of the CROWN Act is stupefied - of course hair length is an integral part of maintaining “braids, locks, and twists”.
