> This won’t be popular but… I don’t get the love for Adele. I know this is the minority view as she won six awards last night, but really, she ain’t all that. Minimal range, shouts, monotone. Amy Winehouse had more talent in her little pinky than Adele does in that plus size 14 dress.

At least Adele is eating enough to keep herself alive.

I loved Amy Winehouse too, but Adele has amazing talent and doesn’t seem to be drinking/smoking herself into an early grave.

And not to compare CeeLo Green with Adele, but how many critics and Karl Lagerfelds are out there dissing on his body shape (or the body shape of any overweight male singer)? I haven’t heard zilch. But I do hear from people who find it necessary to judge Adele on her weight. _sigh_ Just close your eyes and listen to the music, people.

> I missed most of the show, but the highlight for me was Taylor Swifts performance. Well, not the performance actually, but her reaction to the standing ovation when she finished. I caught 3 reaction shots…the first when she turns to the person next to her and says “What?”, the second standing there wide-eyed and mouth agape, and the third disbelief.

It’s the same thing she does after she wins an award. I can’t find the video right now, but someone made one of clips of a bunch of times that she’s won awards and done the “I can’t believe I won” face. She has won a bunch of awards over her career so far, but each time she acts like it’s so incredible.

I think they were trying to keep in mind that while some/most people know it’s not really a Whitney song, this really isn’t the night to remind them.

> What the hell was with all that weird puffing on the words in the beginning?

I think that was a combination of nerves and fake/real crying. I have no idea when she was tapped to do this song, but I don’t think she could have possibly rehearsed for more then 24 hours. I’d be willing to bet that was probably her 5th or 6th time going the entire way through with the band (was it with a band?). To the best of my knowledge (and I could be way off base here), this isn’t one of Jennifer Hudson’s songs. That is, I don’t think she’s done it in a movie/TV show/Glee etc…Nope, I take that back. If you search youtube for “Jennifer Hudson I will always love you -2012” without quotes and the -2012 gets rid of this year’s stuff, she did it a few times in 2010. But either way, she had to go from “I’m just going to enjoy watching the show” to “Holy crap I have to perform a huge song” in less then a day.

I personally don’t understand all the adulation for the Foo Fighters, but the Grammies do skew towards pretty safe middle-of-the-road music, and I can’t say Dave Grohl is not excellent at his craft. I love the guy (his side projects far more than Foo), but his oeuvre with the Foo Fighters strikes me as pretty safe corporate rock. That said, seeing who they were up against in those categories, I can’t really be upset they got five of six categories.

As soon as i realized that they were going to do a Whitney tribute I knew it would be Jennifer Hudson singing I Will Always Love You. As much as I love Dolly, it’s a completely different song when she does it. You need to have somebody who can do the Whitney version and there aren’t many who can. Mariah, Celine, and Christina all could but they would likely all make it too much their own. Hudson was a perfect choice; she has the big voice, people are used to her covering iconic songs, and she’s not famous enough to be difficult to get at short notice. The only other option I thought of was using Jordan Sparks who stars with Whitney in her movie Sparkle, but I’m not sure she could pull it off. FWIW, I think Hudson did great considering she needed to sing well enough to sound good but not better than Whitney and she apparently couldn’t make it through rehearsal without breaking down.

Also, I will admit that I love Taylor Swift. She adorable, like Bambi, but she can actually play both a six-string and a twelve-string guitar and she’s just so darn happy to be there. The crowd obviously loved her too, her ovation was one of the biggest.

Nicky Minaj is just too weird for me, and Lady Gaga just looked ridiculous. You don’t need the weird costume just to sit in the audience. Still love Adele-her vocal in Someone Like You totally deserved that award and I thought that Rolling in the Deep would win Record of the Year the first time I heard it. She was funny on 60 minutes, wondering if she would have to break up with her BF to write another hit album.

Finally, Katy Perry is pissed at Russell Brand.

It’s Dave’s band, but Taylor should get most of the credit for taking them to the lofty heights they enjoy now. Otherwise they’d just be garage band dudes.

ps- Go see them live… you’ll be playing air guitar for four hours.

> Granted it was her most popular song, her “signature song”, but it wasn’t _her_ song. Dolly Parton wrote it and took it to #1 twice. Maybe tribute Houson with a song written specifically for her? And get someone who can sing it better…Parton, perhaps. Hudson may be a fine singer, but this song wasn’t an example of that. Hell, for the way the night went, should have just had Adele sing the damn thing…

I’ve been shouting about this since yesterday. Dolly’s version of the song is completely different and equally as amazing (in a really soft, gentle, sweet way). Dolly would have been a BEAUTIFUL tribute-- but I do realize they had 24 hours’ notice.

That’s Taylor’s thing and it’s ungodly annoying. Bitch, you are 22 years old- not 15. You’ve now won SIX GRAMMY’S. This isn’t cute anymore. “Oh. . . oh mah garsh, y’all! Y’all are impressed with lil’ ol me? Why, I just. . . I can’t!” Every. Single. Fucking. Award. Argh. That annoys me so much.

What annoys me almost as much as Taylor Swift’s mugging at awards shows ;):p, is the fact that poor Adele can’t do a single interview without being asked about her weight. Ok, media: we get it! Adele is fat. Fatty fat fat fat. She’s no waifish and demure Taylor Swift, etc. etc. Ok, STOP ASKING HER ABOUT HER WEIGHT and stop asking her “How does it feel to not look like the average pop star?” Aye aye aye.

\*60 Minutes \*did a compilation of her doing that over and over and asked her about it. It’s annoying.

That said, I think she’s quite attractive and talented. I thought she showed some comedy chops when she did _SNL_.

Nickie Minaj was just off the charts WTF! And I mean that in a bad way. Other than “Roman Holiday” I couldn’t understand any of the lyrics…just seemed weird for the sake of weirdness. And not in a good way.

Given the venue and the makeup of the audience I was surprised myself that she got a standing ovation for her performance. Bigtime award shows aren’t noted for doling out standing o’s and I was surprised the audience jumped to its feet even before the camera switched to Swift’s reaction. I agree she makes the shocked face too much but I think it may well have been legit last night.

[Leona Lewis singing “I Will Always Love You” would have been beyond amazing](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iiRKv_C5Zs&feature=fvst) - there wouldn’t have been a dry eye in the house. (Song starts at 2:20.)

The Washington Post’s critic said that Swift’s song came across as sour grapes, and I have to agree. When you’re on top, punching down demeans you.

Adele’s dress was gorgeous. I’d never heard her speak, though, and given her deep, smooth singing voice, I was startled to hear her talk like Eliza Doolittle.

Springsteen was a bit of a disappointment. Props to him for debuting a new song, but there just wasn’t much to it. Too much Foo Fighters, and Deadmau5 was barely there.

I liked Rihanna and Coldplay, but it seemed like a strange pairing.

Minaj is not everybody’s taste, to be sure, but I thought it was a lot of fun. I didn’t understand most of what she was rapping, but rap always takes me a few listenings. Katy Perry’s always fun to watch on stage.

[Rap Genius is a good site with the lyrics](http://rapgenius.com/Nicki-minaj-roman-holiday-lyrics) — with the additional plus that some of the lyrics (in orange) can be clicked for an explanation. Though the ones on this song are newer and will get better after it’s reviewed by more folks, as rap genius is sort of like Wiki.

It’s an interesting song- not musically but because of what it says about her and her audience. It’s a really self-important and bitter song and the message I got from it is ‘being picked on makes you morally superior.’ It doesn’t. I don’t know if she’s unaware of that, or if she knows and realized her fans would eat it up anyway, but it’s a false premise. I’m guessing it works for her fanbase because it invites everybody to keep living through her (that seems to be the key piece of her appeal), but apaprently the genesis of the song is that she’s hurt that people noticed she sings off-key. How horrible of critics to point out the flaws in a professional singer.

Hah - that’s the comment Jim and I always make when she sings on some show - “She really isn’t a good singer, is she?” So, apparently singers don’t need to sing on key any longer? Sweet! Singing career, here I come!
