Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech (commonly known as the Malaise speech now) backfired on him in public support. In actual fact his approval ratings shot up in the immediate aftermath of the speech but reset itself back to where it started after some cabinet changes and of course the hostage crisis. It was also Ted Kennedy, not Ronald Reagan, who first used the word malaise in referring to the Carter Administration. ---

I first heard the Stewart story back somewhere around 1976, so there was plenty of time for it to get to rural South Dakota. I think it was some time around when Rod started doing disco. The whole story as I heard it was, A plane carrying Rod Stewart had to make an emergency landing when Stewart suffered severe stomach pains. Per Wikipedia - “The law of primacy in persuasion, otherwise known as a primacy effect, as postulated by Frederick Hansen Lund in 1925 holds that the side of an issue presented first will have greater effectiveness in persuasion than the side presented subsequently.” I believe this is particularly true when one already has strong feelings about an issue. The Michael Brown shooting being a prime example. ---
