I doubt Detroit wants him now. In the mid season when three of the top four organization Goalies were injured he was a great emergency option if they could have gotten him.
Now, they are planning on getting a solid backup for long term, but not great success so far I’ll admit.
Carbonneau was tagged because he (unexpectedly?) stepped down from his coaching position, but has denied talking to the Devils.
Then out of nowhere came Michel Therrien’s name as he’s the only person confirmed to have actually interviewed for the position, but it was months ago and everyone had forgotten about him.
The beat writers for the Devils intimated that the new coach and the Parise deal are intimately intertwined… so to answer your question: who the hell knows?!
Really though, my expectation is that we’ll see a little burst of activity this week as whatever stumbling block is holding everything up is overcome, including a trade and a coach named. Then I expect it’ll be another week or two before we find out about Parise.
Wow. I did not know this…former Sabers and Flames goalie Don Edwards will be in court in Ontario today. He will be at the parole hearing of the man, his sisters ex,-boyfriend, who killed his parents. F’ed up story here.
Jesus Christ. Hopefully that bastard will never see the light of day.
So who had Peter DeBoer in their “Next coach of the Devils” pool ?.. Anyone?
Devils hire DeBoer as coach
He did OK things with a tanker team in Florida. Let’s see what he does with the bipolar Devils. Will he get the ones from the fall or the ones from the winter?
Redwing goalie Chris Osgood announced his retirement today. 17 seasons ,13 with Detroit.
Most likely something in between.
MacLean was not a good coach, but he’s not totally at fault for what happened. If he’d been able to properly build a line, line match, make in-game adjustments, prepare the team, keep the locker room under control and not let the players get out of shape, he may have been able to overcome the factors outside of his control like the shortened bench, injuries and unsustainably low shooting percentages… but he couldn’t.
Lemaire is a good coach and the team’s second half was in response to what he brought as a coach, but he also benefited from regression to the mean. There was no way a guy like Kovalchuk (among others) was going to continue to score at such abysmally low rates and his “getting hot” had as much to do with finding his game and comfort level as it did “luck” evening out.
This is Lou Lamoriello’s team and he is the reason that despite the numerous coaching changes over the years the team has maintained consistent (relative) success. So long as DeBoer can properly do what a coach is supposed to do, they’ll be back in the hunt, and if he can show that his record in Florida had more to do with a perennial lack (and loss) of talent and not any failings on his part, then it may turn out to be a pretty good hire.
Reportedly he’s good with young players, and with so many young players in the line-up and set to be in the line-up over the next few years, that bodes well.
Not knowing much about the guy I’m cautiously optimistic, but then, I felt the same way last year when they hired MacLean.
I suppose they’ll grow on me. Still, I hope they can break out the Hawerchuk era jerseys every so often; maybe for the home opener and home games against the old Smythe Division rivals.
I’m sure it’s the nostalgia filter, but I prefer the Hawerchuk era logo to the later Selanne era one.
I like the RCAF look of it, but the F-18 silhouette I’m not fond of.
Phoenix would be the team to break out the old Jets logos. If the new Jets wanted to reach into their past to have retro uniforms, they’d have to be Thrashers jerseys.
Let’s predict which of the 2010-2011 playoff teams won’t make the playoffs in the 2011-2012 season and what teams right now you think are likely to make a playoff appearance.
Eastern Conference.
- Washington
- Philadelphia
- Boston
- Pittsburgh
- Tampa Bay
- Montreal
- Buffalo
- NY Rangers
Western Conference.
- Vancouver
- San Jose
- Detroit
- Anaheim
- Nashville
- Phoenix
- Los Angeles
- Chicago
I think Phoenix isn’t going to be able to make the playoffs. They lost a top goalie in Bryzgalov as well as Jovanovski. I can see Calgary or even Columbus sneaking in.
In the east, I"m going to be very interested to see the new look Philadelphia Flyers. They blew up their team, Pronger’s injuries seem to haunt him, and while it will be nice to not play goalie roulette, they’ve lost some offense. The New Jersey Devils are likely to be able to get into the Eastern Conference playoffs. Way too much talent on that team.
The Flyers will ALWAYS play goalie roulette, though. It is their destiny, and would be even if they had somehow traded for Ryan Miller.
That said, I do think some of their “goalie problems” have been overblown. What part of Roman Cechmanek’s 1.96 GAA or .923 SVPCT did anybody not like?
Washington has completed try outs for and selection of Red Rockers for the 11-12 season.
The part where he let in backbreakingly soft goals every playoff season and then blamed his defense afterwards.
Aaron Boogaard has been charged in the death of his brother, Derek
If you’ll remember, Derek Boogaard of the NY Rangers died of an OD back in May. They’re alleging that Aaron supplied him with the narcotics, and that he tried to get rid of the evidence.
Jesus. As if that family hasn’t been through enough heartbreak.
Is Peter Laviolette an AA member? This story suggests that the Flyers got rid of Richards and Carter because they wouldn’t pledge to stop drinking for a month? WTF? Richards was their captain of the Philadelphia Flyers not the preacher at the First Philadelphia church. I’d be pissed as Hell if my manager asked me not to drink for a month and I wouldn’t agree to such a thing even if that makes me ‘not a team player.’
If they’re drinking so much that it’s having an effect on their ability to play? Why wouldn’t he be in the right? Or even if that’s not the case, have they gotten into trouble off of the ice?
(Then there was that rumor about Carter and Scott Hartnell’s wife in the locker room…)
The pledge to stop drinking was probably done as a result of destructive and shitty behaviour with regards to the drink. Not sure if it was mentioned on here or on my other hockey forums, but there were rumours of them going out and getting shit faced at bars in Philly the night before afternoon games…
Now, I’ve played hockey and softball hung over before–what Canadian hasn’t, lol?–but when you do it for a living and show up to your job drunk or dehydrated and groggy, I think that’s a textbook situation where someone ought to step in and tell you to stop drinking.
Devils rid themselves of the Rolstonian albatross by sending him to Long Island in exchange for Trent Hunter, freeing up $3m in cap space. It’s a good trade all around as it benefits both teams: the Devils get some cap relief and rid themselves of everyone’s favorite scapegoat, and the Islanders get closer to the floor and an upgrade from Hunter in just about every respect.
I question if Trent Hunter can even play any more. If he can, he’s in the AHL or a regular healthy scratch; if he can’t, he’s LTIR bound.
The Devils then use that freed space to sign Parise to a 1 year deal for $6m. There is a great gnashing of teeth by Devils fans about the term; confusion as to why they didn’t use the last four days they had before the arbitration hearing to try to hammer out a longer term deal; rejoicing by hacks like Eklund and Scott Burnside who were just gift-wrapped a year’s worth of rumor-mongering to cash in on; and much licking of chops by just about every fan in Toronto, Long Island, Los Angeles and numerous other cities who will spend the next season furiously debating Parise’s worth, their cap space and what their GM needs to do to sign him next July 1st.
Parise and Lou Lamoriello have both stated that it was done because it was the best option for both sides at the time, suggesting that they were far apart on a long-term deal, but both publicly state that they will be working on a long-term deal (which can’t be signed before January 1st, 2012). Lamoriello has a general policy to not negotiate extensions during the season, but he has made exceptions in two cases for Brodeur and Scott Stevens. If there’s anyone he’d do it again for, I believe it’s Zach.
