I suspect that a large part of it is novelty, some percentage is just “Well, Carlin was funny so maybe this won’t suck” and a significantly smaller percentage is people who are just dying to hear Carlin again. But take away the AI aspect and just say “Here’s a Carlin impersonator saying stuff” and it’d sink without a mention. ---

This society can’t do it because they lack talent, so they do AI, drum machine, auto-tune, tribute bands, apps, computer, etc. ---

Then, as now, [90% of everything is crap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon's_law). The difference is the crap from back then has been forgotten, leaving just the best 10%. Right now, we’re constantly inundated with all the new crap that’s being produced, with little to help us sort what is good and what should be ignored. Social media is awful at sifting the good from the crap, because popular crap gets more attention than anything else. Thanks to AI, we’re seeing an even greater crap to quality ratio. People are shoving their AI crap in our faces, telling us that it’s the future, that we better start making crap too if we want to keep up. Actually, we’re still just as free to pick up our tools and make something ourselves as we’ve always been. Maybe what we make will be crap, and even the good stuff we make will look like crap next to the good stuff other people make, but that doesn’t mean it’s crap and it doesn’t mean we should accept that having AI crap shoved in our faces is inevitable. ---

Me, I can barely stand Carlin. I find him to be smug and too clever by half, sneering at other people with very little introspection. Modern comedians tend to be much more self-deprecating (see Taylor Tomlinson, Noah Trevor, John Mulaney, etc.), which is much, much funnier to me.
