Thanks KS. That’s a great idea. When I get some time, I’ll try to write up an OP.
Sowell stopped writing columns in 2016, and the other two are politicians, not particularly prone to being able to give an honest assessment or a nuanced answer.
This may be a hijack, but when I wanted to better understand conservative positions over the last 10 years, I had previously turned to:
David Frum
David Brooks
Charles Krauthammer
Jonah Goldberg
George Will
Unfortunately all of these guys ended up steering well clear of the Trump Train, so I’m scratching my head at who I should be reading instead. All I can come up with is bomb-throwers, demagogues, and conspiracy-theorists (Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, Alex Jones), typically catering to the lowest common denominators . Help me out here.
So the big problem here is that you’re looking for mainstream, sane, honest commentators who are willing to support Trump. This is a bit like finding medical doctors who read NaturalNews regularly. The former qualities tend to be mutually exclusive with the latter.
Loosen the filters a bit, and you might have more luck. Reduce “sane” and you end up with Alex Jones or Rush Limbaugh. Reduce honest and you end up with shills like Kellyanne Conway. Reduce mainstream, and you end up with basically the alt-right human biodiversity crowd, who everyone rightfully shuns, or other such niche groups who have horrific values or have thought of really impressive ways to rationalize their shitty thoughts.
I’m not sure which conservatives you wouldn’t consider “bomb-throwers” or “demagogues”, but here are the names of some non-politicians for your consideration (in no particular order, and with the acknowledgement that several of them oppose Trump to various degrees):
Eugene Volokh
John Stossel
Tucker Carlson
Michelle Malkin
Ben Shapiro
Erick Erickson
Neil Cavuto
Glenn Beck
Mark Steyn
I’d also recommend you spend some time perusing the content on the Heritage Foundation’s website.
