Even if Dunn was wrongly convicted of murder, his penalty was still much less than the one received by Davis, and so laws should be in place to prevent this sort of tragedy. ---

I disagree, on two grounds. Firstly, what happened to Davis was not a penalty, not a punishment. It was either a crime, or it was an unfortunate side effect of Dunn defending himself. Secondly, comparing the fates of Davis and Dunn is irrelevant. The principle that, because something terrible happened to one person, something bad but less terrible happening to someone else - who doesn’t deserve it - is fine, seems to me to be a terrible principle for a justice system to adopt. Basically, what some people have been saying is that, because some people abuse self defence laws to get away with murder, those who act completely within those laws should still face some punishment. That, I reject utterly.
