_Little Black Sambo_ was a children’s book written by Helen Banneman around 1900. There may have been several in the series, all centered on the adventures of the young Indian child.
It is remembered today mostly as a relic of ignorant racial stereotyping, especially in the artwork. It is also more commonly associated with sub-Saharan African ‘black people’, partly due to some subsequent illustrations and partly due to ignorance in grouping all ‘black people’ together.

Although Helen Bannerman lived in India and the story involved tigers, the original [Little Black Sambo](http://www.cnn.com/US/9801/28/sambo.revival/#1) (1899) looked African. Some later editions - and the Sambo’s restaurant chain - made him look Indian in order to avoid charges of racism.
