So, it seems my friend Maiden, and her new friend, lurkernomore want to get better acquainted. But, she’s reluctant to do it in her welcome party thread, and thereby ignore the other party animals. So, I decided that I’d just start another thread just for this purpose. 😃 Then, I got to thinking. I’m sure there are others out here who would like to get to know someone better, and I don’t mean necessarily man and woman, or pairing off, just someone you’d like to get to know better. So, here it is, the thread to do that in. I’ve put several large, comfy couches and chairs scattered around this big room, and big floor pillows as well. Plenty of munchies and drinks are on that table and there’s plenty of ice too in the fridge. Soft music is on in the background, and several lava lamps and water fountains are strategically placed around the room for ambiance. I’ll start, til maiden and lurkernomore get here, if they see this. I’d really like to get to know MysterEcks better. (I have lots more, but I’ll start with this sweet gentleman) ---

Ok, I’ll play. I met Snooooopy at Sue Duhnym’s party in San Jose, but I didn’t get a chance to talk to him too much. He’s a sports writer and I’m jealous of him because of my secret fantasy to be a journalist (a vocation which I screwed for myself early on). I also read his thread complaining about his part-time writer who flaked on him and was half contemplating offering my services. It probably wouldn’t work out as I have no car and know nothing about local girl’s high school volleyball, but still I figure knowing a journalist might be a good way to get on the road of actually becoming a journalist. All that aside I found Snooooopy to be an articulate and intelligent guy. I never told him that so - there you go. ---

Here I was all ready to post about how you don’t get mugs or toasters for introducing people to the SDMB. Then I see how out-of-place that comment would be. That has rarely stopped me. So who I’d like to get to know . . . [joke] If anyone knows who I’m going to marry (not Palmyra), could you pretty please point her this way? Would be nice to know she’s alive and female and all that crap.[/joke] No, I didn’t have an actual reason for posting . . . other than that I want to get to 3000 posts and this is as good a way as any to do that. ---

Oh boy… **purplebear** , having ruined my no-smiley policy, now causes me to have stage fright. Well, I’m not exactly fascinating, but let’s see what I can come up with. I go by R.C., or Rich…or “hey you!” will work sometimes. I’m from The Middle Of Nowhere, Pennsylvania, where we correctly say “pop” rather than “soda.” I’m a fan of the Pittsburgh pro sports teams, which means I suffer from a lot of _sportus disgustus_…and I’m a Penn State alum, which this year doesn’t help that condition. I have a BA in Political Science (a politician! boo! hiss!) and a JD (A LAWYER! BOO! HISS!), which probably means I’ll be among the first against the wall when the revolution comes. I’m a registered Republican (oh, stop with the booing and hissing), mainly because I fit in slightly less poorly than with the Democrats. I’m 37 years old and divorced. This past weekend I got to meet my ex-wife’s new husband for the first time–she wants everybody to be friends. Somewhat to my surprise, I survived the experience. I’m 6’ 1 1/2" tall, and I weigh 270 pounds–way too much pizza. I have longish brown hair, except on top where it’s turning invisible (I know it _used_to be there). I have a beard and moustache, also brown…except for a little blond. For some reason, the older I get, the more blond that shows up. (I’d think it was gray, but of course that’s not possible.) I have green eyes, neither of which are very cooperative–I’m nearsighted in one and farsighted in the other. (Jeez…I feel like I’m doing one of those online personal ads.) (No, before somebody asks, I’ve never done an online personal ad.) I’m diabetic. I’ll never understand people who use IV drugs–I _hate_sticking needles into myself twice a day. After seven and a half years, you’d think I’d be used to it. I’m also a raging insomniac. I’ve written everything from legal briefs to a novel (which I hope to get published eventually)–and a few posts here as well–but I am still a pretty bad typist (I use a total of five fingers). I was even worse with typewriters, though–I used to be one of the leading consumers of Liquid Paper. We won’t discuss my handwriting–even _I_can’t read it sometimes. I read a lot for pleasure. Since I started writing fiction, I’ve developed a habit of critiquing other people’s writing styles. This is a bit distracting–it’s hard to lose yourself in the story when you just _hate_the writer’s use of parentheticals. In terms of the SDMB, I’m fairly obscure. However, I am the SDMB Chief Crybaby–I’m still waiting for the first stipend check for this position. My favorite drink is ice water. My favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla. And I love the song _My Heart Will Go On_by Celine Dion. Gee, PB seems to think we were being so evil about everything…you really trust us, huh? Well, I never even gave my name out here, much less a photo, so I guess I was the wild card. (The length and complexity will be two strikes against it with publishers, unfortunately, but I can’t cut it any more than I already have.) Actually, I would quite like to have someone in the San Francisco/Oakland area that I could call upon. Teams in my paper’s coverage area do travel up there, and it would be a lot easier for me to send someone who already lives up there instead of having someone from down here drive up an hour and drive back an hour. The fact that you don’t have a car might make it difficult, though. The first step to become a journalist is to give a small paper (like mine) a call and ask if they need any part-timers. They generally do. It’s not like you need a degree in journalism to become a journalist – most of the people at my college paper were English or history majors, and I was a biology major, in fact. Journalism pays wretchedly, but on the other hand, I rarely have to get up before noon and I did get to ask Jerry Rice a question once. ---

I’d like to get to know you all. 🙂 But I haven’t really been here long enough to be able to pick any one person yet, so I’ll just have to leave it at that. I’d love to hear about MysterEcks’ novel tho, I too greatly respect anyone that can write. I’ve got ideas for a novel or two of my own, but I have not the discipline to ever get any of them done. ---

OK then, might as well, not that I’m terribly interesting or anything. 🙂 I hail from the land of Aus, Melbourne to be more precise. I’ll be turning 18 in a few months. I’m currently working part time and studying computer science and physics at uni, also part time. I skipped a year of high school, more through acciedent than any particular effort on my part. In real life I’m hopelessly shy, and I don’t get out much. Don’t have an SO atm, nor have I in the past, though not through lack of effort on my part. I spend my free time writing short stories, thinking about writing novels, and on a few programming projects. And reading, I read avidly. I love lizards, to the point where I have a collection of them on my bedside table (no, not real ones, before anyone asks :)) and one of my friends regularly teases me about having a lizard fetish. And I love the colour blue. Especially really dark shades of blue, that are really hard to differentiate from black.
