I guess the difference is whether it received some pretty strong responses from a few dopers or whether it received pretty strong responses from a large majority of the board. I mean, if you happened to pick a topic that’s a really hot button issue for me (say, you decided to insult Titanic ), and I would react much more violently than you would have expected, and maybe you’d find 3 or 4 more Titanic-lovers, but then there would be a bunch of other Titanic-detractors in the same thread. Sure it would be messier and nastier than you’d expected. But it wouldn’t be a sacred cow. It would be, umm, a booby-trapped cow with mousetraps near it that if you got near it, you’d get stung. But not a sacred cow which, if you got near it, you would be violating something holy. If you see the increasingly strained analogy I’m trying to make.

There are opinions that do get piled on by Dopers - and for good reason. Open a thread about “crystal healing works” in Great Debates. Post a homophobic rant in the Pit. Mention that you plan on stealing from your employer because they are too profitable anyways in MPSIMS. Post in IMHO that if your girlfriend, who has always says no in the past, gets drunk enough to pass out, its OK to have sex with her. Yep, those are opinions that you might not want to admit to on the Dope.

But to whine about how you alone on the Dope are left out because Buffy or Terry Prachett is universally adored is really not paying attention. I like the LOTR movies, but I’ve said several times that I don’t thing the books are well written - and OTHER DOPERS HAVE SUPPORTED ME AND AGREED. The majority opinion around here seems to be that Princess Bride is a funny movie worth quoting - but it is not an island of one that stands apart holding an alternate opinion. Very few pit threads (I’m actually guessing none) have been started pitting someone who thinks Firefly is less than wonderful and frankly should have been cancelled. And when people do get pitted for those opinions, it generally isn’t the opinion that is being pitted, its the jerkish behavior of coming into a thread where everyone is talking about how much they love their cats and isn’t their new kitten cute and thread shitting on it.

There is a difference between opinions you shouldn’t mention on the Dope (and there are some funny ones - like the shoe thing, or the cat declaw thing, or the vegetarian thing - you won’t be ALONE in your opinion, but you will end up with twelve unexpected pages of people being passionate that you may not have expected) and opinions that are probably minority opinions, but you aren’t exactly being sent into exile for holding them - almost everything that comes up in Cafe Society is going to be the second. And yeah, the people who seem to think that you can’t admit to not liking Buffy - they need to give the rest of us some credit - cause frankly - that’s insulting to the vast majority of Dopers.

That’s why I think Rob and Amber should have been given the special consideration they deserved in last year’s TAR. There was not even an official recognition of them at the end of the race. The whole celebration was about the winners (whoever they were … who can even remember now?). I thought that it would have been fitting to give Rob and Amber a million dollars for the simple reason of who they are, and the fact that they were willing to give the show a ratings boost by their appearance. Plus, a five or ten minute retrospective of their lives and careers in reality TV. I might add that they should have won, and would have won had the producers not been orthographically anal.
