It’s a great line, but it needs context. It’s from **Charade** (1963), and it’s spoken by Reggie Lampert (Audry Hepburn) to Cary Grant’s character. Throughout the film he has, when forced to, admitted that the last name he gave her was false – Peter Joshua, Alexander Dyle, Peter Canfield, and Brian Cruikshank (which is probably his real name).

Several prints ruin the last line by cutting it out or having some annoying sound over it.

Similarly, the last line of Fred Zinneman’s **Day of the Jackal** :

I’m not really fond of these, but they belong in any listing of Last Lines:

> [@](#):
>
> So close - the infinitesimal and the infinite. But suddenly, I knew they were really the two ends of the same concept. The unbelievably small and the unbelievably vast eventually meet - like the closing of a gigantic circle. I looked up, as if somehow I would grasp the heavens. The universe, worlds beyond number, God’s silver tapestry spread across the night. And in that moment, I knew the answer to the riddle of the infinite. I had thought in terms of man’s own limited dimension. I had presumed upon nature. That existence begins and ends is man’s conception, not nature’s. And I felt my body dwindling, melting, becoming nothing. My fears melted away. And in their place came acceptance. All this vast majesty of creation, it had to mean something. And then I meant something, too. Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something, too. To God, there is no zero. I still exist!

They’re from Richard Matheson’s **The Incredible Shrinking Man** (1957).

I think they were hard-pressed to give the film an upbeat ending, couldn’t really find one, and took refuge in bombastic rhetoric. Scott Carey continued to shrink. And, although he beat the Spider, it’s clearly only a matter of time before a robin or a nematode or an amoeba gets him.

I’d love the last line to be “The stuff dreams are made of”, because “Huh?” really isn’t a great last line.

Czarcasm, I believe we should give “The Maltese Falcon” special dispensation.
