# GHR-15 - Live to be 100!

Okay, a workmate of mine, who knows I’m an insufferable know-it-all, asked me this morning about the dietary supplement GHR-15. Supposed to either contain or stimulate the production of human growth hormone. He said he heard about it on a radio program which claimed it was the “greatest medical breakthrough - ever”. Even bigger than antibiotics. Riiiight.
Google and Yahoo only link to commercial websites hawking the stuff. Nothing on SDMB, Snopes, Mayo Clinic or from the NIH or FDA on GHR-15.
I want to continue my reputation as Mr Smartypants around the office. So, gang, what’s the Straight Dope? Just another sham or the greatest medical breakthrough - ever?

If it was really the “greatest medical breakthrough - ever” wouldn’t you have heard about it in the legitimate press by now? Assume it’s a scam until you hear otherwise.

Anything that purports to add years to your natural life span is major bullshit. Your life span is determined by genetics and, in part, by how well you take care of yourself while you’re on the planet.
There is no “fountain of youth.”

As far as I know, growth hormone has to be injected - and often - to be effective.

Yeah, that’s been my thinking all along. But I’m hoping that somebody here has some more information on this product. How is it supposed to work? Is the purported mechanism reasonable or pseudoscientific bullshit? Is the stuff relatively harmless or death-in-a-bottle?
My friend is of the type to assume there’s something to this, unless there’s evidence proving that it’s all hogwash. Hey, isn’t that the FDA’s official position on supplements now?
