Yes!!! Nice shot Wolf!! One of the truly cheesy classics but you have to admire the way it propelled itself along the mountainous area.
On a side note, has anyone noticed a similarity between the wonderful ‘Robots on Broadway’ scene from ‘Sky Capt.’ and the parade scene from ‘Ghost in the Shell: Innocence’ or is that just too obscure?
ADV just last year released a dubbed version of the original Macross in the States, with the original Japanese version’s voice actress for Minmay reprising her role in the English dub.
Yeah, that Kronos robot was quite a design.
Obviously, the typical Ray Harryhausen crowd did not* work on that film.
Also (especially when Kronos is first shown), the camera angles, lighting etc were much more “artsy” than the typical sci-fi fare of the period.
It’s as though the director and special effects people were fans of Orson Welles or Fellini.
I like the scene were Kronos steps on the Mexican villagers. It was a neat effect and some planning went into planning the camera angle. Definately Orson Welles.
I was underwhelmed by Patlabor and Gundam, I must admit. The Iron Giant and Laputa: Castle in the Sky both rock, however - great stories, interesting characters and some terrific action sequences. Both highly recommended for any giant robot fan.
Actually, which Gundam did you watch? Cause the quality and style varies all accross the board depending on which series you watch. If you didn’t like Gundam, you were probably watching the wrong Gundam.
I’m not a great fan of giant robots, unless the story is about more than just mecha. So I liked Dai Guard when I saw it recently. The motto at the start of each episode is, “Even a salaryman can save the world”, and much of the story is about the office politics of the Public Relations Division No. 2 which finds itself operating Dai Guard to save Tokyo, Japan and the world – and spending more time in conflict with the military and with the rest of he corporation than with the monsters they are fighting. If you like a large helping of comedy with your giant robots, you should like it.
