What about metal detecting or geo-caching? If the kid is 3 she can easily ride along in a backpack carrier so no babysitter needed. ---

It sounds like you have a very good relationship. He sounds really thoughtful. I myself am not very good at hobbies of the artistic nature (painting, woodworking, etc) but I wish I was. I think if he has even a little bit of talent, he would find the suggested artistic hobbies really fun and relaxing. Also, there is always cooking, maybe if he likes cooking, or shows even a little interest, some pans, a cookbook, and ingredients for something he might like to cook would be nice. 🙂 ---

I like the model rocketry idea - there seems to be an intersection between computer games and model rocketry hobbyists. ---
