> This is another time where the social norms on the SDMB are completely out of line with my personal experience. If I had a friend whose bf/gf was home from a month long trip where they barely talked and they got a call from them in the middle of our conversation it would go like this:
>
> Friend: “OMG BF/GF IS BACK! I’LL TALK TO YOU LATER!”
> Me: “Yup. Peace.”

> This would be the farthest possible thing from rude. Do you people have to finish every phone conversation to it’s conversational conclusion before it’s polite to say goodbye? Jeez.

Maybe the gf feels that it is sisters before misters?

I think this above is one of the more sensible posts in the thread.

I think this is what I was expecting and when it didn’t happen I reacted badly.

After much thought and input from the community I realize that there are many sides to the story.

I have been planning this trip for a very long time so my life basically revolved around it. However, hers certainly did not. Although she was interested in the trip, her excitement and interest about it was much less than mine. I lived it and was (and am) bursting with excitement and information about the experience. Her not wanting to hear about it seems to have lessened the value of my experience, in my mind.

Yeah, the email was dickish but I sent it the day I arrived. I was having a very bad day.

Have you opened up the “Ask the guy who just went to the Everest Base Camp” thread yet? Us Dopers are often a curious bunch who are interested in unusual experiences.

And its YOUR experience. Something you valued, desired to do, and went and did. Nothing is going to devalue that. But remember it for yourself - blog, journal, make a scrapbook (I’m sure Michael’s Crafts has an “Everest” page ;)), write a book. But do it for yourself to capture your experience. There will be people excited to share that (if you really want to share it, call a school, offer to speak at a library). And people who won’t. But almost no one is going to be as invested in your experiences as YOU.
