Ska-punk band Less Than Jake had a female saxophone player named Jessica, who quit the band around 1998 to become a teacher. She was a real sweetheart, but they’re all great people.
Neko Case played drums in Cub before becoming an alt-country and power pop goddess as a solo act and with the New Pornographers.
Here’s an early one. Linda LaFlamme, the keyboardist of San Francisco proto-psychedelic band, It’s a Beautiful Day. I don’t think she even sang backup.
She left after their classic first album, It’s a Beautiful Day, featuring “White Bird,” and the band was never the same.
Does anyone know about Ash or Sick Puppies? They both have female guitarists, but I don’t know enough by either band to determine if either woman ever sings.
Sorry, but Mo Tucker sings on “After Hours” and the always delightful “I’m Sticking with You”. The second is admittidly an outake, but showed up on the VU album and the box set. Mo has also put out a couple of solo albums.
