I think you should traumatize them with a copy of **Wizard of Oz**.

Flying monkeys, dwarves and an evil witch.
If it is good enough to haunt your childhood, it’s good enough for them!

( parent of a 9 year old girl.)

I’ll get you, my pretty!!! You and your little dog, too!

I’d second Ever After and Stardust.

_Wizard of Oz_? Bah. If you really want to get the job done, get _[Return to Oz](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089908/)_.

🙂

Another suggestion for a less emotionally damaging film is: **A Christmas Story**.

My kids totally adore this film and it is mandatory to watch it for a Christmas in July fest here.

\*Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian. \*

Adding to the list:

Ella Enchanted
Cinderella - Brandy/Bernadette Peters/Whoopi Goldberg version
Josie & the Pussycats (fun for kids of all ages!)

How about Fly Away Home or Ever After? Or A Little Princess or The Secret Garden?

I second The Princess Bride.
I also like Freaky Friday(I only know the Lindsey Lohan version) or that American Girl movie (Kit?)–it got good reviews.

High School Musical is ok, a bit bland and white bread, but they’d probably like it.
I would rather have my tween girl (ok, she’s now 19, but back in the day) watch and hear some swear words or maybe some heavy petting rather than raunch and violence. Dennis the Menace is horrid, as is Dr Doolittle (unless we’re talking Rex Harrison, but that movie is loooong and kind of young for these girls). ANY Eddie Murphy movie is a weird choice, IMO.

YM may of course V.

We actually just finished watching Kit. Good movie, not necessarily a sleepover movie. And Ever After - which the girls liked. My daughter is ten. I have to run, but I’ll come back with some of our favorites.

Pair **Ever After** with **Labyrinth**. Like a great many women in their early 30s, I’ve had a soft spot for the movie since elementary school. In college we found out one of our friends had never seen it, so we rented it that night and made her watch it. She loved it too 🙂

The Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap is a favorite.
Princess Diaries is popular
Shrek 1, 2 and 3
Ella Enchanted
Nancy Drew
Kit Kitterage (this one was terribly educational as well as entertaining for them)

I just showed my daughter Roman Holiday as a response to The Princess Protection Program. She liked it - but she is used to Mom’s strange movies and this was way better than most of Mom’s strange movies. But I said if she is going to watch silly princess fantasy movies, she needs to watch the best of the princess fantasy movies.

A couple of my favourite kids/family movies:
_The Borrowers_ is wonderful.
And on a similar note, so is _Indian In The Cupboard_, though not really very girly.
Nor is _Cats and Dogs_, but I liked it.
I watch _Matilda_ frequently.
_Nanny McPhee_ is pretty decent.
And _Spiderwick Chronicles_ has some exciting adventure in it.

> My wife and I are looking for a clean, age-appropriate movie for a bunch of 10-yr old girls for a sleepover party. We’re looking for something non-animated and light-hearted. Ideally, it should be laught out-loud funny!

The obvious choice is [_The Slumber Party Massacre._](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slumber_Party_Massacre) [And](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slumber_Party_Massacre_2) [sequels.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slumber_Party_Massacre_3)

I was going to suggest Princes diaries also as well as the Wizzard of Oz.
The Wallace and Gromet shorts are cute.

Also add to the list:
The Chronicles of Narnia
National Velvet

True, dat. And I third or fourth The Parent Trap–either version is great.

> Failing that, just get the 1920 silent film _Der Golem_. Little kids love Weimar expressionism.

I spit on Der Golem! Nosferatu and Caligari also for that matter!

A sleepover of pre-teen girls? What you want is “M” starring Peter Lorre!
