How about Fly Away Home or Ever After? Or A Little Princess or The Secret Garden?
I second The Princess Bride.
I also like Freaky Friday(I only know the Lindsey Lohan version) or that American Girl movie (Kit?)–it got good reviews.
High School Musical is ok, a bit bland and white bread, but they’d probably like it.
I would rather have my tween girl (ok, she’s now 19, but back in the day) watch and hear some swear words or maybe some heavy petting rather than raunch and violence. Dennis the Menace is horrid, as is Dr Doolittle (unless we’re talking Rex Harrison, but that movie is loooong and kind of young for these girls). ANY Eddie Murphy movie is a weird choice, IMO.
We actually just finished watching Kit. Good movie, not necessarily a sleepover movie. And Ever After - which the girls liked. My daughter is ten. I have to run, but I’ll come back with some of our favorites.
Pair Ever After with Labyrinth. Like a great many women in their early 30s, I’ve had a soft spot for the movie since elementary school. In college we found out one of our friends had never seen it, so we rented it that night and made her watch it. She loved it too
The Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap is a favorite.
Princess Diaries is popular
Shrek 1, 2 and 3
Ella Enchanted
Nancy Drew
Kit Kitterage (this one was terribly educational as well as entertaining for them)
I just showed my daughter Roman Holiday as a response to The Princess Protection Program. She liked it - but she is used to Mom’s strange movies and this was way better than most of Mom’s strange movies. But I said if she is going to watch silly princess fantasy movies, she needs to watch the best of the princess fantasy movies.
A couple of my favourite kids/family movies: The Borrowers is wonderful.
And on a similar note, so is Indian In The Cupboard, though not really very girly.
Nor is Cats and Dogs, but I liked it.
I watch Matilda frequently. Nanny McPhee is pretty decent.
And Spiderwick Chronicles has some exciting adventure in it.
