Giving Notice - how much time?

Why would you think the only measure of value is vacation time? I work for a place now that pays me well above industry standard, but there is not much vacation. I worked for five years in a place that paid me well below industry standard, but had very generous vacation time. Why choose vacation as the only measure?

Because that’s how MOST companies view it. If you are a general worker (non-union), generally you get 1 week or less vacation at time of hire, Administrative - 2 weeks, Professional - 3 weeks. As you continue with the company, you get more vacation and presumably, you are more valuable to the company.

I don’t really see why this should make any difference to how much notice I’d give; if it’s really so hard to deal with someone leaving, perhaps you should have made a better effort to retain them in the first place. Also, does your company have a policy of automatically paying someone for the entire period of their notice even if the company says ‘you’re out of here’ the day they give notice? It’s rather hypocritical to expect an employee to shoulder all of the risk, though for some reason companies that take a mercenary attitude towards their employees expect unswerving loyalty in return.

Personally, I’d try to give 1 month notice if I was on reasonable terms with the company and felt that it was needed, or two weeks otherwise. The only time I’d walk out without giving notice (or give less than 2 weeks) would be if they had really done something to screw me over, and I’ve never been in that situation.

“how long you get paid”??? Gee, as far as I knew, one gets paid for the entire time one works, so if one gives a month’s notice and works that month they get paid for that month, plus (in my company) any accrued annual leave time.

My rationale for doing this involves the concept of not burning bridges. Sure you’ve left my company, and found another job. I have a better feeling about the folks who’ve given me sufficient notice than the bitch who gave exactly 2 weeks notice, even tho’ it was clear she’d known for quite some time before (for a professional position etc.) We were able to start interviewing after she’d already left.

As opposed to Doug who gave about a month’s notice, was able to help us interview and train his replacement and still gets stellar job recommondations from me some 6 years later.
