When we left for work this morning he was spread out belly down on the cool kitchen floor, just a couple inches away from the food and water dish. When we got home this afternoon, he was in the same spot, and our cat, Persephone, was sitting next to him and whining.
His name was Gizmo, and he was an eighteen year old cockapoo/terrier mix. He was a dog of many tricks, his favorite one being grabbing bunny slippers from under the bed, dragging them in front of company, and giving his best imitation of Ron Jeremy on Viagra. He also figured out that the catbox was a hellova lot closer to his bed than the front door(which took the _cat_ quite a while to get used to, believe me!) He was friends with all the local cats, and I suspect that he had some sort of mutual agreement with the local squirrels. To the best of my knowledge, he never bit anyone or anything his entire life, and if a thief snuck in holding a pizza box, Gizmo not only would let him into the house, he’d show him where we hid the valuables.
He buried him in the part of the garden he loved to dig up, next to the hole in the fence he loved to slip through.
With his favorite bunny slippers, of course.

I am finding it hard to type this, as my eyes are all blurry from reading your goodbye to Gizmo.

I am so sorry, **Czarcasm** , for the loss of your sweet dog. Very, very sorry. ☹

**Czarcasm** , you have my sympathy. It’s been over two years since I buried my faithful yellow lab and even though I love the “new” dawg, I still miss that ol’ yeller bastid.

I feel like [this](http://www.explodingdog.com/january1/hasitbeen1yearalready2.html) when I think of him, still.

My condolences, **Czarcam**. I know how it feels to lose a longtime pet. I still mourn for the old, yellow mutt I grew up with.

I’m so sorry, **Czarcasm**. It’s been just over a year since I lost my Zeke, and there are still days when the wound feels brand-new. It’s a hard, hard thing to say goodbye to a buddy.

It sounds like he was quite a character, one of those dogs who, in your memory, will always be talking like Jimmy Stewart, or smoking cigars, or watching “Batman” reruns. (Somehow I always picture Zeke climbing trees, even though to my knowledge she never did that.) Know that you gave him a good life, and he understood that and loved you back.

</div>

Oh, that’s really rough. I lost my dog earlier this year, and I know it hits you really hard.

But it sounds like Gizmo had a long (18 years!) happy life. Burying him with the bunny slippers was a great idea; it’ll give him something to do in Dog Heaven.

My dog is named Gizmo, too, so this thread caught my eye immediately. He’s a 10 year old Norwegian Elkhound.

</div>

Eighteen years is a darn good run but it’s never long enough, is it?

In a way, you and Gizmo were lucky. No long drawn out decisions, no trip to the vet - he just slipped away in the company of a friend and in the home he loved. No one can hope for more.

Gizmo sounds like one of the all-time good dogs. Condolances from the zoo household and a wet slurp from JoetheRottie.

I doubt very much they’ll allow _that_ in Dog Heaven. 🙂
Right now the cat is running around the house, mewing loudly. She knows something is wrong, and she is very upset.

I’m so sorry for your loss **Czarcasm**. It sounds like Gizmo had a great life surrounded by much love and fun. I lost my Jake (a cocker spaniel) 7 and a half years ago and I still miss him. I’m also sure Jake is taking Gizmo under his paws in Dog Heaven and showing him the ropes right now. That’s just what he would do.

Again, sorry for your loss. ☹
