# Glass experts: making your own fire-glass

I’m in the process of building a gas fire pit, largely from scratch. Eventually I will need fire-glass to finish the look and to get the flame effect I want. I know typically it’s sheets of tempered glass, smashed to bits (and tumbled to make it smooth if desired). Any reason I cannot use smashed wine and beer bottle bottoms? I have access to significant quantities of these…

I don’t think those are made from tempered glass. You might end up with little exploding chunks.
