From what I’ve read, we should be starting another ice age right now. The dominate climate of Earth for the ‘recent’ past has been very icey, cold and dry. The recent climate stability has lasted much longer then the norm. IIRC, the time between ice ages has been very short and our period of stability is abnormal.
Another ice age would be catastrophic beyond measure. From what I read/heard, it would come on very quickly like someone flipped a switch. It would probably result in huge human death and misery as well as WWIII as industrialized countries tried to flee to the equator. The world would be very dry with deserts and steppe’s dominating the ‘warmer’ equitoral regions and most of the Earth unihabitable because it is under ice or near the ice. The remaining desert/steppe will be less efficient for agriculture.
While I understand the concern with ‘tampering’ with Mother Nature, I fear the coming Ice Age much, much more than I fear global warming.
The concerns with tampering are valid. We don’t know what effect it will have. However, I think most people think of the Earth as some benign garden that will be optimal if we just do not tamper. The Earth is harsh and ‘normal’ Earth conditions are cruel. We are spoiled with our unusual 10,000 years of climatic stabilty. It will not last.
