There was a rash of incidents in which a man would charge at a group of several police officers while brandishing a knife. In each case, all of the officers would fire, killing the bullet-riddled man instantly. There was much criticism about not using non-lethal take-down techniques. After all, we’re talking one perp with a knife and several trained officers. But be that as it may, it seems to have become known that if you wanted to commit suicide but were too wimpy to do it yourself, just run at some cops with a knife. That seems to have explained at least a couple of the incidents. ---

This reminds me of the CSI episode in which the Mythbustrs had a cameo. An officer used a butane based pepper spray to subdue a suspect. He was then tasered. His shirt burst into flame and he was burned to death. [YouTube video here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uEfcomL8iA). ---

Well, in fairness, if a suspect can’t be subdued using pepper spray _or_ a taser, setting him on fire is probably the only way to go. 😉 ---

And the Police Officer tried to put the flames out with his bare hands and was stoned by local children as young as 12. This guy was a known violent offender. The Commissioner said the only alternative for the officer was using a firearm (the guy coming at him with a cannister of petrol (gasoline) with a lighter). Meh.
