Guy I know once described to me his childhood experience at a summer camp, in which he somehow fell into the “nerd” role. He said every time someone was beaten up or otherwise humiliated and felt down, they would go seek him out and beat _him_ up so as to feel better about themselves and restore a bit of their lost swagger. ---
