I hate pop. It’s really disgusting because all the “pop superstars and rolemodels” couldn’t sing in tune if their life depended on it. I am talking of course about such acts as N’SYNC, BSB, Britney Spears(BS as I will call her), Ricky Martin etc. etc. etc. I know plenty of bands that totally kick ass and yet, they don’t get any reconiztion because all the boy-bands and acts like that (like the ones I mentioned above) get it all because 95% of teenage girls are drooling over them because they’re “sooooooooo cute!!!”(ugh). Really, is Justin Timberlake really everything everyone says he is?! I wouldn’t know because it hurts my eyes to look at any of his (or most of those other horrible pop groups) pictures and kills brain cells everytime I think about this subject, but I very seriously doubt what most poeple tell me about him. But it’s not just the girls who are drooling over these pop acts, the boys are drooling over BS because she has implants. It makes me sick!! Holy crap! Our little girl done growed up! And such a natural shape, too. :rolleyes: As for the OP, I mostly agree with you (I have no particular taste for current pop music - as I type, I’m listening to a live version of one of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s earlier recordings), but everyone has their own taste, ya know? Granted, most teenagers’ taste is only in their mouths, but your taste is not mine, and mine is not theirs, and so on. Variety makes the world go round. ---

Oh, get over yourself. You think they can’t sing in tune? I can sing in tune, and I’m nowhere NEAR good enough to get signed to a record label, much less put out an LP or anything similar. They make their livelihoods based on, among other things, their ability to put out music. Yeah, they don’t play their own instruments or write their own songs, most of them, and they didn’t start out as struggling garage bands in Seattle or North Carolina, but they are musical artists. Just admit it; you’re jealous because they have something you don’t. Actually, more than one thing. ---

I agree. I think she was more attractive before the pop-whore transformation. On a related note I remember somewhere seeing proof that she was actually natural. I’ll look around to see if I’m not just delusional. ---

Do you really think they can sing in tune, **iampunha**? Their voices go through about fifty stages of processing, and there are often added tracks with the voices of professional back-up singers blended in to give their voices more volume. If you listen carefully you can hear it, and people in the music industry will tell you so as well. I don’t like pop and I don’t respect boy-bands and Britney-esque acts but I don’t hate them because I know that it isn’t their fault. The music industry markets these acts because they know what sells. The public is not very demanding, especially as the target audience gets younger and younger. I can’t sing in tune either but if I were given the chance to earn millions singing and prancing about I would probably take it, too. ---

It’s also not unheard of for there to be voice-overs during a particularly physical choreographic sequence; one of the things that’s difficult in high school musicals, what with the lack of voice-over equipment and such, is to get a group of students with enough stamina and such to be able to sing loudly and well while dancing. It’s really quite difficult. Their voices go through lots of processing, sure, I’ll grant you that; however, I’ve heard several of the artists in the OP live, and while I don’t deny that there are occasional slip-ups, they do sound quite nice. I just don’t happen to care for Britney Spears’ style of singing, but I’d wager that Dido, whose voice I thoroughly enjoy, would sound divine on television without any voice-over or electronic implant, so to speak. Plus I’m a sucker for a pretty face. ---

I should have clarified that not all “pop” singers need voice-overs and can’t sing in tune. I don’t have much respect for people who can neither sing, nor play any musical instruments, nor write music and yet still make a living as “singers”, but those who can do any of the above, like Dido, for example, are fine with me. Even in those who can’t, I still admire some of the female acts for their dancing prowess… I’d like to learn some of those moves myself… ---

BTW, it’s not “just the boys” who are drooling over BS. 🙂 IMHO, popular favor has turned to vacuous, poppy acts such as BSB and N’Sync because during the late '90’s “alternative rock” became so self-loathing and ultra-pretentious. Hopefully, _meaningful_ music is right around the corner again. I’m keeping the faith. ---

Sorry – anybody who loads up a rant with _four_ opportunities for wordplay deserves the puns they get. In all seriousness, in this metro. area of 1.2 million, we have two weekly alternative tabloids that regularly run reviews of local groups, who seem to have little difficulty in finding play venues, and a quarterly devoted to them. I know that Columbus OH also has an alternative weekly that runs such reviews; a SDMB alumnus was writing them, last I knew. I’d suspect that numerous moderate-sized cities have such opportunities. Is it merely air play that bothers you? Start a petition in favor of more airplay for groups you like/feel deserve it, direct it at the station most likely to listen. “KRAP, your home for _solid rock_” or similar station self-identification would give you a clue. ---
