For the record, the Great Rivalry used to be State and Carolina. Duke was the pussy school long before Carolina was. Of course, this was back when we started our horseless carriages with a crank rod after setting the magneto switches and the proper choke.

It wasn’t that long ago. I can tell you when the Duke/Carolina rivalry started. It was shortly after the N&O ran Jim Valvano out on a rail. State’s Chancellor selected his successor specifically not to have a winning team. Yes, this it true. Coach Robinson told this an alumni dinner I was attending.

And yes, the N&O had it out for Valvano. My cousin’s husband quit the N&O shortly after Coach Valvano’s death because it made him sick to his stomach to see “so many people gleeful over a man’s death.”
