Every so often I hear “Son of a Buck” used in place of Son of a bitch. I don’t know why it always cracks me up. Other than its having a “k” in it. . ---

[Gordon Bennett!](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/6226293.stm) It bears the distinction of ([possibly](http://wordsmith.org/words/gordon_bennett.html)) having come from a real person’s name and actions. [James Gordon Bennett, Jr.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Gordon_Bennett,_Jr.), who went by his middle name to distinguish him from his distinguished father, was notoriously erratic. According to Wikipedia’s sources, “In 1877, he left New York for Europe after an incident that ended his engagement to socialite Caroline May. According to various accounts, he arrived late and drunk to a party at the May family mansion, then urinated into a fireplace (some say grand piano) in full view of his hosts.” I just have to love an exclamation with as good a story as that one attached. My sister went to see a production of “Hapgood” as a teenager, and used “Oh, sugar!” for years afterward. There is a local advertising campaign for Jarritos soft drinks, which uses as its slogan, “What the fruit?” ---
