Godwin's law before the Nazis

Oh an one more in this vein. In Iran Alexander the Great is remember as a historical boogee-man.

Middle East and S Asia still has memories of the Mughals. Genghis Khan is means wanton creulty. Halagu Han gave his name to the word for killing in Urdu and Persian; Halak.

Pssst… those were Mongols. The Mughals, although partially of turco-mongol descent, were slightly less prone to Hording.

They were also eventually defeated by the British Empire. And since the Mughals were descended from the Mongols, and the British Empire defeated the Mughal Empire, then that means that…

The British Empire Defeated the Mongols!

Tune in next time for more “Martini Enfield skews world history in favour of the British Empire”. Next week: How the British Empire defeated the Ancient Egyptians.

The division is a modern (and western) one. The Mughals were another in a line of C Asian “adventurors” who showed up. From Genghis down to Babur (and I am not even counting Mahmood Of Ghaznavi). The local tounge described them all as Mughal.

Huh, well, you learn something new every day. I always thought those two were too similar for coincidence… Anyways, is there any distinction between the earlier Golden Horde guys and the ones Mughal refers to in English? I mean, even if Mughal refers to both, do you know if there are separate terms for either or both?

Practically yes. The Mongols were from Mongolia, the later ones were of Turkic origin and the “Mughal” with a “U” means the ones who ruled for a time all of Pakistan, India, Afghanista, as well as bits of Burma, Tajikistan, Tibet and Iran (these were areas occupied during the various campaigns). But they shared many things in common (the Turkic tribes of C Asia were not unhesitant in calling themselves “Mongols” and adopted many of their customs). As well as passion for beheading people, creating a mountain of head and raping women and leaving destruction in their wake. It is estimated that the agricultural output of Iraq is only 60% of what it was before the Mongols showed up, and this after a great expansion under Saddam Huessin. While most of N Iran is now moonscape, at one time it was a fertile, prodcutive area. Most of the Punjab area was left a desert by the Mongols, it was only a lot of investnet by the Government of Pakistan in irrigation projects that has reversed that.

Sorry for the rambling! The Mughals (the ones with a “U”) did leave a lot of a good legacy, lots of architecture, as well as a road network that is still used.
