It really shouldn’t have to be this way. Bitch and moan about the failings of “socialized medicine” in Great Britain, but that is a damned sight better than the deplorable state of medical coverage in the US.

My cousin got rear-ended by a pickup truck at very high speed while riding his bike on the highway a couple of years ago. The stem of the seat impaled him in his rectum and the bike was unrecognizable. It was a miracle that he survived at all but he had no medical insurance and the medical bills were close to $1 million dollars.

His mother asked the family for donations, we talked about it and then declined to give anything. It wasn’t because we didn’t care - it is because we do. Paying off bills like that would break the bank of a whole lot of people. We told her to tell him just not pay it and declare bankruptcy. That is what it is for. Even if we gave thousands of dollars each, it wouldn’t have made a dent in his medical bills.

Yeah, thats my view. Its one thing to help someone pay for college or help someone who walks 2 hours a day to work to buy a used car, but a 7 figure medical bill, you might as well declare bankruptcy at that point.
