# Going to San Antonio. What should I do there?

I’m going specifically to see the eclipse but, while I’m there, what else should I see/do? Which section of the river walk should I do? Should I go see the Alamo? I love museums/nature/geology.

That is a very generous offer and I may just take you up on it! I’m going to try to see if I can rent a car and head to Ingram. But that’s looking to be a bit cost prohibitive. Renting a car for the duration of my stay 6-10 is just as much as my return flight.

I know this is some sort of treasonous statement for a Texan (and one born in San Antonio, no less) to say, but the Alamo is pretty underwhelming. It’s just the chapel of the mission where the battle took place, but the actual mission itself was much larger and extended across the street in a couple of directions.
However, the Spanish missions (there are four others in town) as a whole are pretty cool, and there’s a trail between them, etc…
The Mercado (“Historic Market Square”) is really neat to wander around in, and you can’t go wrong with a meal at Mi Tierra.
I’ve always really enjoyed the Witte Museum in Breckenridge Park. It’s a natural history museum with a local focus- local dinosaurs, Native Americans, geology, etc…

I did look up the Witte and thought that’s somewhere I would really enjoy seeing. So I’ll put that on my list.

San Francisco de la Espada, clearly.
There are actually five old Spanish missions in San Antonio - they start at San Francisco de la Espada in the south, and are arrayed northward along the river until you get to San Antonio de Valera (the Alamo), with path that follows the old Spanish road between them and an aqueduct that provided water to some of them. We hiked the whole thing in Boy Scouts back in about 1985, and it was much more interesting than I’d ever expected.
