I’ve only been to the movies by myself twice. One time was to the Final Fantasy movie, and I wasn’t alone in going alone, if you get my drift.

The second time, I saw The Score. It was the last week it was being shown, in an out-of the way theatre, at a matinee in the middle of the week. There was only one other person in the theater.

And he sat right behind me.

> Wow, how do you pull that one off? I have no problems with going to the movies by myself, but would never go to a restaurant by myself. Heck, I won’t even eat at my college’s dining hall unless I have the newspaper or something to read with me. I guess because I have to serve myself there–the last thing I’d need is to go to a restaurant and have the host/ess and waiter/tress all give me crap about “Dining alone tonight?”

Add this to the list of things I’ve done frequently by myself and never once considered that there might be something odd about it. I’m not a good cook, and I haven’t always been in a relationship, so dining alone was the only option if I wanted something that didn’t come out of a can.

I go to a restaurant to eat.
I go to a movie theater to see the movie.
I go to a concert to hear the music.
I go to an amusement park to ride the rides.
I go to a ball game to watch the game.

These things can be more fun with someone, but the primary purpose of the activity remains even when you go alone, so I simply cannot understand why anyone would hesitate to do any of these things or think someone else strange for doing these things alone.

For the OP, I probably go to movies alone about half the time, and generally movies I see with other people because of the other people (‘Do you want to go see X?’ ‘OK, sure’ - I don’t often ask other people to go to movies).

Yeah, I do both of those a lot.

See, these are different - I’d only go to a ball game to hang out with people, if I just wanted to see a game I’ve got a TV. For a concert or amusement park, you have lots of downtime between rides etc. where having someone to talk to while waiting in line or between bands comes in handy. Plus talking is fine and dandy at all three of these (well, rock concerts at least), unlike at movies.

I can understand why someone would only want to go to a ball game, concert, or amuesment park with other people and might consider going solo wierd (though I’ve done all three by myself at various times), but I don’t understand it for movies. You shouldn’t (and generally don’t) talk to your buds during a movie, so the only interaction with whoever you go with is during the walk to/from the theater, and I don’t really understand why it would be considered odd not to need someone to walk to and from your cars with.

I enjoy going to the movies alone. I also like to dine alone and shop alone. So many people I know just have to bring a buddy along for shopping, not me. I like to do things my way, and on my timeframe. However, I am very social and have a lot of friends. I just prefer certain things alone.
