I would like to learn about the different periods of art (e.g. Fauvism, Pointillism, etc.). Can anyone recommend a good book for this purpose?

As an artist and teacher myself , I would very highly recommend the [Shock of the New by Robert Hughes](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shock-New-Art-Century-Change/dp/0500275823)
and you might be able to catch some of the[tv Series](http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/features/shock-new-eps.shtml)on Youtube etc also well worth seeing.
