Good free software thread

LaTeX, Evince, Inkscape, Banshee.

Worst. Name. Ever. Every damned open source project has “Libre” somewhere in the title. It’s not even a common English word (if it even is an English word, in what other context do you hear libre?) When forking, can’t the programmers hang off naming the new project until somebody joins with an inkling of how to go about marketing software to people other than fellow neckbeards?

This is for people still using WinXP:
DropMyRights

It simply and elegantly addresses the gaping security hole in XP due to most people always logging on as an administrator. You still log on as administrator, but the program allows you to run vulnerable apps (like your browser and other internet facing apps) as a lower-access normal user, which prevents changes to important system files/settings.

And as this guy convincingly argues, it is a MUST if you are running XP:Every Windows XP user should drop their rights

DropMyRights part 3: Living with it
(Don’t let the multiple articles and their names discourage you, it’s really simple to install and very easy to live with.)

Seamonkey.

It’s what Netscape grew up to be.

Pidgin is a far better universal chat client than Trillian, which I used to use, but which seemed to get more and more gross and bloated over time.
