the one outside seems to have all 4 pillars with the center caldroun thing. it looks a bit ā€œfortress of solitudeā€ with the icy pillars. ---

No. to the torch lighting. I hated it. The torch is supposed to be such a great thing. To my mind, one person should light it. I really hated the cluster-light. For me it detracts from the importance of the event. Sorry Vancouver - you blew that very important aspect of the ceremony. Other than that; kudos to the folks and city of Vancouver. Great opening ceremonies. ---

The girl singing O Canada is Nikki Yanofsky. Sheā€™s 16 years old, and is a fine jazz singer-- first sang at the Montreal International Jazz Festival at age 12. She wasnā€™t a good pick for the anthem, though I enjoy her singing usually. Sheā€™s so gifted, a miracle. ---

I really didnā€™t get the choice of the Cohen Hallelujah. I realize that Cohen and K.D. Lang are both Canadian; it just seemed that the song itself was not really appropriate to the situation and I found myself saying ā€œhuh?ā€ at the choice. ---

Okay, I get to watch it from the beginning now. Thatā€™s a very strange version of our national anthem. And the flag isnā€™t flying right for that, either. Not very moving when your flag is all twisted up. Oh my God. Phallic totem poles, too. Was that the unofficial theme of these games - ice erections? ---

That was really lovely I thought! I loved the opening part with the North -\> Ice -\> Whales \> Totems \> Trees. I did think all the singing was pretty dreary. I love kd lang, I love that ā€œHallelujahā€ - it, too, is not a dirge. The fiddlers kicked all sorts of ass. Having a poet to introduce the Vancouver part was simply brilliant. Overall, I liked this a lot better than Beijing. It seemed more heartfelt. I didnā€™t get to see the torch lit though - my dvr cut off just as the three posts went up. Did they ever get the fourth post? ---

Cat, have to disagree. That was not a good rendition of the Canadian anthem. I always think that a great singing of the Canadian anthem is when the crowd (i.e. us folks) join in lustily. We did not do that in Vancouver, ergo, not a great try. I hope we will rectify this soonest when we win our first gold medal and sing to raise the rooftops when we hear our anthem played. I am poised by my TV and ready to sing right now! Maybe they will not hear me in Vancouver, but I will sing out loudly. Hope you are ready to join me.
