Pothos is a good chice, but they need some light, if you want them to stay varigated. Another one to look at is a snake plant. Wide, flat leaves that stand straight up. I’ve scraped the dust off mine, on the windowsill, at 30 degrees, and it looks no worse for wear.
dorm room… let me think… purple haze?
hmm… anything that was not made of rubber commited suicide when put into the bad enviroment of my room…
dodgy
Try a Jade plant (crassula ovala). I have several of them and they survive almost anything, full sun, no sun, cold, heat. And if you trim it, it kinda turns into a low maintenance bonsai.
I managed to kill my cacti actually… those dumb people at the grocery store told me to water once a week and since I wanted it to live I did so… and it drowned. But one that did well for me for awhile (till I forgot to water it for a couple months at least) was the aluminum plant… it’s kinda nice actually leafy no flowers but the centers of the leaves are a matte silver sort of color. It looks fairly nice like that.
The problem with most cacti is that they are outdoor plants. They really dont do too well with the low light levels inside. Also, the soil needs to dry out all the way before being watered again (constantly moist soil will rot their roots).
The watering suggestion i’ve mentioned only applies to the spiny desert types. Tropical cacti come from the rainforests as epiphytes. They like regular water, but like epiphytic orchids need a fast draining mix. Overwatering will also kill these.
Note: it’s better to let your plants go on the dry side (not dessicated), than to over water and rot the poor things.
Personally, I’d go with a spider plant. You can always give sproutlings as gifts when you want, which is a GREAT gift.
Also, I saw a peace lily at the florist near my house the other day. They had it floating in a glass vase, and also in the vase was one of those really brightly colored fish that they sell in the small glass globes. It was really neat. They had put some colored glass beads in the bottom of the vase as well. REALLY neat.
That is a Beta, or Siamese Fighting Fish. They breathe air in addition to using gills. They become trapped in the roots if the lily trying to get to the surface. It isn’t enough water for them to live in well.
Really? I asked the lady behind the counter about it, and she said that they’ve had the fish for 8 months.
